They are not that fast though. Drink fuel, and are a bit soft for a 'hot hatch' kinda car.

Clio Cup ftw!

Not really an exotic engine, and the gearbox is the same in 172 mk1 >> 182 afaik, and I have not heard any horror stories.

Should be fine. As always do lots of homework whatever you buy. VAG stuff usually has some nasty bits that can and do go wrong on any particular model!

For me it was a classic case of too much hype. I was expecting to be pinned back in my seat. It was nothing like that.

If the OP is after a resonabley quick, well built car, the golf is a pretty good choice. I am slightly biased having a mkiv myself and i know they are not the last word in sportiness, but they have enough power, lovely interior and a nice understated look. For those suggesting the R32, although great car you would be lucky to find one in budget.smile

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I'm just wondering if the OP got the Golf? If so, how did you find it?

I'm considering an early one of these too.

I remember a mate setting his heart on one, going to buy it, drove it and was very dissapointed, same dealer had an S3 with a mild remap to 240 bhp and a brake upgrade, he bought that instead, still sticks out as feeling very quick even now, tried keeping up in a 8 valve Mk2 Golf GTI and couldnt for some reason biggrin

Im hankering after a 20 valve converted MK2 Golf to redress the balance, just need to convince the wife.

Buy what you want! What she wants shouldn't even be a consideration in choosing YOUR car!
Unless of course she's paying half smile

I looked at a 4 motion a few years back.Thought they were nice enough but i ended up getting an E46 325ti Compact. I kept it for 3 years. A car i grew to love...even the geeky looks. Problem free motoring and a bit of a sleeper too with the 192 bhp straight six and non M pack styling to give the game away.

A worthwhile alternative to take a look at over an e36 328i.

I have one albeit highly modified and its superb. The engine & soundtrack are a peach. Upgrade the haldex and sort the suspension out; there's lots of aftermarket mods available.

230+ bhp not too hard to achieve. Excellent build quality and half the price of its bigger brother the r32 (most parts interchangeable).

Any relevant forum threads, anywhere, that you can point us to? re: haldrex mods, etc.

Ive had a clio 172, great car if you like being an idiot, has no street cred unless youre young! Then had a 325ti compact, much nicer car that can be thrown around, can be an animal or a pussy cat, superb car. Then had the Golf V64M and is a different beast to the aforementioned. The V6 sounds beautiful, it goes well but it is more a sports tourer than a race machine. I think the wood trim kinda gives it away... Fuel consumption is good on the motorway, but around town it just slurps it down. As there werent many made it should be reasonably collectable in the future - thats what makes cars collectible, the production!

For the price of a v6 4Mo at the current time you’ll struggle to get anything better as an all rounder.

The vr6 is vastly superior to the 1.8 turbo.
