Great car magazines that no longer exist
Discussion
Fast Lane more or less became Complete Car. I don't know what happened to Complete Car as it never made it to any shops in SA that I visited.
Fast Lane is my all time favourite. I really enjoyed reading Mark Hales's test drives in particular. I still have a few of the mags, including their full test of the Esprit Turbo SE, the one with the F40 track drive on it (I never got the tape) and the one with the Ferrari 328 vs. Pantera vs. 911CS. That one has an article from P.J O'Rourke about rednecks, beer and pickup trucks that I've read hundreds of time and it still leaves me in stitches.
Another magazine I miss was a bi-annual series called Exotic Cars, released by Road & Track. I just loved the pictures in them mostly. Some truly rare exotics in those magazines.

I really miss Retro Cars magazine.
I really like all sorts of cars so fanboy one make mags don't interest me and neither do articals about keeping the screw heads standard on a 1972 Morris Ital etc etc etc.
Retro Cars was basically exactly what I enjoy about tinkering with cars. Taking all sorts and making them faster/better/more fun and not taking things too seriously or becoming obsessive about one make.
ETA Holy st just done a search and it appears to be back!

"" There are 66 issue. Purchased when new (then give away many years ago. Just spent too much money buying them all again. Dont forget the four issues of Superclasics that followed. ""
I did exactly the same. Cost me an arm and a leg to get the collection complete again. Only saving grace was eBay meant that it did not take much time, although I miss the "old" days of trawling around autojumbles etc.
Missing one from earlier in the the thread had been lent to a "mate" and is hopefully on way back to me!
Forgot about Superclassics. Was it done by the same team?
Revised, complete list of issues for Supercar Classics below if it helps anyone.

I was partial to 'Jalopy', later cursed by the controversial merger with 'Slowcar' to imaginatively become 'Jalopy featuring Slowcar'. A great read, and if you didn't like it you could recycle it as lavvy paper.
Another vote for 'Jalopy' here! The descriptions in the buying guide towards the back were ace, even though they didn't change much. I still have the 'Win a Trabant' issue lurking on my shelves somewhere and possibly one or two others.[quote=Whitney-Paine]"" There are 66 issue. Purchased when new (then give away many years ago. Superclassics - Editor Peter Tomalin
Spring 1995 - issue 1 (cover 250SWB, 275GTB/4 and Daytona)
Summer 1995 - issue 2 (cover Jaguar D-Type)
Autumn 1995 - issue 3 (cover Miura headlight)
Winter 1995 - issue 4 (McLaren F1)
I have duplicate copies of Supercar Classics - Summer 1984, Winter 85/86
April, May, July and October 1989.
I also used to buy when I was much younger and gave away - Fast Lane, World Sports Cars, Car (when it was a good magazine), Performance Car, Top Wheels and many others which I wish I had kept.
Now I subscribe to Evo, Octane, PPC, Retro Cars, Retro Ford: cancelled the subscription to Performance Bike a couple of years ago. I still like 1980/1990's bikes and cafe racers.
In fact maybe that's that I am doing wrong: stop buying magazines and maybe I could afford a sports car!!

The rest of the articles can be rather variable with spelling and grammar mistakes galore, plus the occasional guest writer who can't really write. Pictures are generally good though.

5 years later !!I have this very magazine. I bought in in April '87, when I was 14. The cover price was £4.00, which was massive compared to the £1.30-ish of most other car mags (Fast Lane, CAR etc) but, as mentioned, the cars on the front cover grabbed me (i.e. AM Vantage, Esprit Turbo, Merc & 288 GTO)
Sorry about the bump, but found this through a google search.
If anyone is considering hunting down a complete set of bound Fast Lane, Supercar Classics, Superclassics and I 'think' one more spin-off, then I need to get shot of my complete collection, including the give-away tapes etc.

I was right, there was another spin-off called 'Car Classics'! Got them too... I miss the relaunched Performance Car from a few years ago. It wasn't as professional as Evo, but all the cars featured in it were attainable. I'm starting to lose the will with Evo again - every recent issue has had some variety of supercar on the front that I couldn't care less about.
Bumped this in case anyone is watching....
