How to turn off ESP on 2009 Golf GTI

Hi chaps

i'm quite new here but after some help, i need to turn of the ESP on a 2009 golf GTI, with the button it only partially deactivates the system, allowing wheel spin but not anything else, i dont want to start pulling off wires to the modulator as it will limit the engine power (car is DSG) and also fill it up with fault codes and possiblly effect the ABS and brake bias.

Does anyone know if there is a fuse or button sequence to kill it off?

before anyone panics i am a profesional test driver on a closed proving ground testing tyres not playing silly beggars round the local chippy

I know that on some cars if you press and HOLD for 10 or so seconds, it switches everything off.

I am prepared to be proved wrong however!

I am pretty sure this is the case with the Golf too

I've done that, no change i'm afraid it actually turns it back on!! i've been on the golf forums to not much avail most people seem to think turning it off is a bad idea and chase you out with crosses and garlic!!

Tried pulling the ABS fuse?

That was the only the way of disabling the ESP or TC on the Mk4 Astra (for rolling road runs) - unless the car was fitted with the TC switch. Just be aware it may also disable other items (on the Astra it killed the power steering too).

Pretty sure you can't, not by any button sequence anyhow.

As you've found out, even when switched off by the button, it's still there in the background, it just doesn't cut in as eagerly.

i am 99% pressing and holding for 10 or so secs turned it off completely when we were driving the new GTi and Scriocco's at track back in July...

certainly didnt feel like an aided drive.. !

It's to like the Volvo setup, is it? Five presses in three seconds.

There will no doubt be a value in the ECU that will allow you to do this (there's something similar in the Mk5), you may want to ask the people behind VAG-COM, failing that a quick call to VW UK would I'm sure give you an answer

According to VW's technical department:

"The ESP system in the 2008 models could be disabled; however, in our new 2009 model year, this feature may not be completely disabled as it is functioning directly with the Anti-Slip Regulator (ASR) as one unit. When you press “ESP OFF,” the light will flash, and then remain solid indicating that it is not engaged or active, but is still enabled. If the light continues to flash, I would recommend consulting your local Volkswagen dealer to ensure the system is operating properly."

the 2008 ABS module they are referring to is the MK70 which didn't have asr.
the 2009 ABS module MK60EC1 does have asr.

however, it can be disabled.
using VCDS to enable an option allows the button to disable asr as normal (flashing light).
but a longer press gives you a solid light and fully disables ALL ESP systems.
