Surely larger wheels mean more unsprung weight, which is shocking for handling?

The 15" wheels on my MR2 were fine for grip and cornering on the road and on track, so I can't see that sidewall height makes all that much difference... except for ride quality maybe.

it certainly affects tyre roll, but this is handy on some suspension setups like light wight live axle sports cars.

Think they look stupid and out of proportion on many cars as well as being detrimental to overall performance.

Well said; fully agree. Empty fashion for muppets with zero dynamic advantages for any road (not track) car.

Forthcoming Audi A8 replacement, due 2024, is set to have 23" wheels as standard.

Pity, I liked the A8, but I'll be damned if I'm going to drive around in a car sporting the automotive equivalent of a gold lamé cod-piece.
