well the rear tyres on my bmw are getting bald (almost off the markers) which is making this snow/ice driving very hard. so ive been looking at what to buy.

now i don't have lots of money to spend on them, i certainly dont have £200+ per tyre for the michelins, but i wan't a decent tyre that will perform on dry/wet roads aswell as the odd trackday.

now ive come accross the avon ZZ3's that are £98 each from camskil in my size (255/35/18)

so what are these like? anyone got/tried them?

or should i pay the extra £40 per tyre on something like toyo's?

cheers

I ran a set on my Integrale a few years ago and they seemed quite good on that. I did wear them out quite quickly but I don't think the trackday helped!

I've had Avon ZZ3's on my last 2 E30s (swapped the wheels over when i wrote the old one off frown ) and i've never had a problem with them.
Odviously they're not very good with snow till you get moving. But for wet weather / dry weather use, they are quite good and last well considering they're quite a soft compound of rubber.

I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.

I'd go for Kumho Ecsta Sport KU31, Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta, Falken FK452, or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric.

I'd try getting prices from more than one place too, as I've seen Camskill doing great prices on one tyre but being way out on another (same goes for every other tyre dealer of course).

I normally shop around at:
  • Camskill
  • TyreTraders
  • MyTyres
  • BlackCircles
  • eTyres
  • Costco (for Michelin)

I had them on the old BMW. They were generally pretty good but I wasn't very comfortable with them in very wet conditions.

I've got them and I'm fairly happy with them. I'd get them again as the grip the give at the price seems really good. They've worn alright too.

In the snow they've been absolutely pants though. Probably not just down to the tyres though as it's around 300bhp through the front wheels with an auto gearbox - not the best combo!!

ZZ3s were annoying improved over the ZZ1s and ZZ2s (which were great for sideways action and lasted a couple of trackdays where I spent most of the time trying to go sideways on each corner in between being cautioned by the marshalls wink ).

Great advice as usual from mmm-five. Worth checking out his suggestions.

I have a pair (same size too) on the back of my E60 and I think they're ok wet or dry. Seem to be wearing ok too.

ZZ3 were OK, but just OK - nothing special.

I go on about it given a chance, but give the FK452 a chance?

I had ZZ1's on my Leon Cupra and they were the worst tyres I have ever experienced by quite some margin!

Avoid like the plague IMO

Falken 452's

have them on my z3m coupe, prefer them to the zz3's which i've had b4. and 4/5. good traction & good price.

452s or Eagle F1 Asymmetrics are the ones to go for.

Ditchfinders IMHO. As sson as I've worn them out on a driver training day I'm fitting the Vred Ultrac's.

Got them on the back of my e39 BMW. 265/35 r18's fine on a car that size, never pushed them to the limit. Good for the money.

I had them on a BMW, and thought they were pretty noisy. An ok all rounder, but even though I got them cheap, they were no bargain really.

I've got Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas all round on my Focus and the front two very nearly need replacing 5k miles later. The rears don't look like they're masses better either. They grip great, but that's painfully quick to need replacing at £450 a set. I've haven't taken traction control off either! smile

hmm, so they are an okish tyre.

the falken 452's are £103 each, would this be a better tyre then, as pleanty of people on here seem to recomend them?

just i had some falkens on my corsa (not sure which ones) and i was not that impressed with them, but that was a while ago.

i have previously gone for either eagle f1's or toyo T1R's since which have both been really good tyres, but they are just so expensive in 18".

so do you think i should give the falkens ago? or is there anything else in my size for around £100?

I really like the T1R's on my supercharged Z! Camskill gave me a great price and my local tyre fitters (North Eastern in York) matched their price.
