RE: Driven: Porsche Boxster Spyder
Discussion
I drove one of these at Porsche's Silverstone facilty a couple of weeks ago and my other half has a boxster S to compare it to. The car drives absolutely beautifully, really easy to slide it about and have loads of fun; it feels much lighter and more "Lotus-like" than an S. I'd agree about the gearbox: Faster with the dual clutch, but not as much fun and as I'm not good enough to go racing, I'd go for the fun everytime and save almost 3 grand.
However, the roof is an utter abomination: It takes two people to fiddle around and fit it and whilst once on it's not bad, it's all a bit Heath Robinson.(wrote this before I read the post above!!)
After we went my other half decided to change her Boxster for.....a 911 C4S, conclude what you will!

Is it the only PDK porsche available with the flappy paddles apart from the gen 2 turbo?
I would have thought having these on a proper track car would make the experience extremely focused.
Providing the system is correctly sorted out.
I think that for the first time of my porsche life, this is one that i could see myself ordering with the flappy paddles.
The trouble is that the boxster S was a hugely accomplished car even as an occasional track car. Improving something already great can be tricky.
I quite like it. Like all 'special' porsches, it may well become an interesting 'collector' if they don' t produce tenth of thousands of them.
I could see myself owning one in black with the sport exhaust, nice interior specs (yes, blasphemy), nice big wheels, pccbs are still too expensive.
The trouble is that once you ticked all the boxes, you are in 997 gt3 mk1 territory. This makes more sense in my opinion.

I dont get the comment about adding a passenger and making it the same weight as an ordinary Boxster?? If you add the same derivative to an ordinary Boxster, the RS would still be lighter, no?? Should you not only compare like for like? Same goes for the options, Porsche give it to you lighter, its the customers prerogative if they wish to undo this with additional options if they want, just like on a standard heavier Boxster? You cant criticise the car for this!
Given the old 986 Boxster S is now so cheap...
...would it not be quite good fun to do the following...
1). Remove entire roof mechanism - save loads of weight. Maybe put some poppers on so you can have an old school tonneau cover if it rains.
2). Buy the old "double bubble" cover thing and put that on.
Here is one...

3). Spray it white or whatever and add a graphic.
4). Remove interior and switch to hardback seats etc. Maybe make some simple RS style door cards. Steal bits from 996 GT3 etc.
MAke yourself a DIY Boxster Speedster.

Either did I, first time I've heard the RS on its description....Has PH started recruiting editors from FHM or something?
