I drove one of these at Porsche's Silverstone facilty a couple of weeks ago and my other half has a boxster S to compare it to. The car drives absolutely beautifully, really easy to slide it about and have loads of fun; it feels much lighter and more "Lotus-like" than an S. I'd agree about the gearbox: Faster with the dual clutch, but not as much fun and as I'm not good enough to go racing, I'd go for the fun everytime and save almost 3 grand.

However, the roof is an utter abomination: It takes two people to fiddle around and fit it and whilst once on it's not bad, it's all a bit Heath Robinson.(wrote this before I read the post above!!)

After we went my other half decided to change her Boxster for.....a 911 C4S, conclude what you will!

Less is more? I'm not so sure.

It's no GT3, that's clear and realistically if you are going to strip it out then it should be backed up by a lot more performance.

Me thinks Boxster drivers are being short changed.

Is it the only PDK porsche available with the flappy paddles apart from the gen 2 turbo?
I would have thought having these on a proper track car would make the experience extremely focused.
Providing the system is correctly sorted out.

I think that for the first time of my porsche life, this is one that i could see myself ordering with the flappy paddles.

The trouble is that the boxster S was a hugely accomplished car even as an occasional track car. Improving something already great can be tricky.

I quite like it. Like all 'special' porsches, it may well become an interesting 'collector' if they don' t produce tenth of thousands of them.

I could see myself owning one in black with the sport exhaust, nice interior specs (yes, blasphemy), nice big wheels, pccbs are still too expensive.

The trouble is that once you ticked all the boxes, you are in 997 gt3 mk1 territory. This makes more sense in my opinion.

"early customers are also apparently ticking quite a few options boxes - the average price for the 50 UK cars ordered so far is around £56k."

So Porsche take a little bit of weight out, then the customers put it all back.

Really don't get this car, don't see it as a true RS.

I dont get the comment about adding a passenger and making it the same weight as an ordinary Boxster?? If you add the same derivative to an ordinary Boxster, the RS would still be lighter, no?? Should you not only compare like for like? Same goes for the options, Porsche give it to you lighter, its the customers prerogative if they wish to undo this with additional options if they want, just like on a standard heavier Boxster? You cant criticise the car for this!

I quite like the way it looks but would choose a Standard Boxster S over one I think, I couldn't put up with that roof and it just doesn't seem special enough to be a genuine GT3 alternative. As I can't afford any of them at the moment it doesn't really matter.

Way to diminish the "RS" brand.

I like the car but it shouldn't carry those initials.

Given the old 986 Boxster S is now so cheap...

...would it not be quite good fun to do the following...

1). Remove entire roof mechanism - save loads of weight. Maybe put some poppers on so you can have an old school tonneau cover if it rains.
2). Buy the old "double bubble" cover thing and put that on.

Here is one...

http://www.eagleday.com/boae.html

3). Spray it white or whatever and add a graphic.
4). Remove interior and switch to hardback seats etc. Maybe make some simple RS style door cards. Steal bits from 996 GT3 etc.

MAke yourself a DIY Boxster Speedster.

It doesn't have the RS moniker - almost every reference to the car in the story is consequently wrong rolleyes

Has PH started recruiting editors from FHM or something?

Porsche have made an already very good car a bit better, but for a much bigger outlay, and they know they will sell every single one. I guess they are masters at cornering the market for one off specials. Now, where's that Cayman CS...

Its not an RS..has a Boxster Spyder badge on the back in black. I sat in one today in the showroom.. Like the seats , though they are different here in NA.it shares seats here with the GT2.

I like the look of this very much.

I'm seriously considering having one of these at some point.

If I were to spec a new one I'd have it in white with just the basic radio/audio interface and floor mats - no air con and no other options whatsoever.

I subcribe to the less is more idea. This is just a bit odd though - and that roof is awful.
