Fine! This is the exact answer I was looking for! So if the car can *only* make 230bhp from the stock turbo - how do you go about this? And what are the associated costs? And would it be any good? What would be better for the money? (but still fulfill the role of Estate & affordable daily?) (I know they are all questions, but I love Pistonheads vast knowledge on all queries automotive!)
Jump on seatcupra.net, number of guys did various different options on the 20vt on both Ibizas and Leons (Octavia in a summer dress), hybrid turbo as above, turbo kits, even engine swops. All of them are > £2000 once the turbo comes out. If I remember correctly one guy did a turbo kit for 2 or 3 grand but he did most of the work himself. At the least an intercooler, piping ( if not standard fit), remap and if the turbo does not fit the standard manifolds then custom manifolds, oil feed pipes, air intakes etc. never mind the labour cost and cost of the new turbo.
Cheers! Will check this out! Honestly, my pointless thirst for car knowledge is worrying... smile It's just that the VRS Estates seem *such* good value, and it would be a shame not to coax a little more power! wink Still, at least if i ever need a Skoda Estate, i now know more about what they are capable of!
Check out the now ex JBS Octavia 4x4, 450 Bhp in a pretty standard looking Octavia estate, would give an RS4 or M3 driver a nasty surprise, Q car supreme.

I have a 2010 vrs and I'm certainly looking to upgrade it in the future.

I have seen basic remaps on this car claiming 240bhp with no other mods.
Heading towards 300bhp with nothing more than a few minor mods (not a new turbo)

That is a newer car than the op suggests though.

Even std people are not expecting a Skoda to be that quick.

I've got an Octavia estate with the 1.8T engine but it's not a VRS. It's 150bhp but apparently a remap will see just under 200bhp, and because it's not the 'sporty' one it's even more subtle!

For sale too.

There was a cracking '10' plate estate last night on the M8. Was a blue estate, lowered with black wheels. Looks the dogs cool

Don't remember the price I am afraid - the remap was done about 6 years ago!!!

I've also mulled over the idea of a new Beetle 1.8T, 150bhp in standard tune but some Audi TT suspension bits, ARBs better brakes etc, and then even a little bit of work with a better intercooler and a K04 Turbo and a remap to take it over 230bhp would give a reliable car, that people would call me names for owning, and girls would love, and SWMBO would approve of, and would be quite nippy when the mood took me.
I had one, and it was a hoot hehe It was quite a sleeper.. Originally it was a 150bhp 1.8T (All the uk ones had a KO3S turbo, which is pretty good). Just a decent custom remap alone brought it up to 228bhp (although in fairness, it dyno'd with more than 150bhp when stock). It had tons of midrange torque, and with it's standard short gearing, it really accelerated very well. It definitely surprised a few people biggrin
The little electric pop up spoilers they have are kinda funky too..

Bear in mind there is also the 4x4 version - might sap a bit of power but helps to get the power down.

Re Mods for £1500 - that is where forums and Ebay come in.

I'd expect to be able to find a bigger used turbo for around £250.

Just came across this.

My old Mark one, 1.8 T Track car produce 245 BHP and 310 ft lb torque at Surrey Rolling Road with, full Miltech exhaust, sports cat, big intercooler, big air intake and a full remap. All on the original turbo maxed out.

Huge improvement over standard.

Not seen a standard Mk1 VRS on the roads for a while. I wonder how many are still out there.

Going from 180 to 210-220 bhp was cheap and straightforward, but it started to get pricier after that. There were a few people with quite a bit more though.

I sold the black Octavia about 18 months ago. It was fully road legal, brilliant track car. Suspension, brakes, ARB’s, Cupra front end and LSD.

Just bought back my old immaculate silver vRS that I sold about 7 years ago!!

Planning to keep standard looks and tune to 300bhp.

Haven’t seen one on the road for ages!
