Blue smoke from exhaust - but only after oil change?

We have a 1997 1.4 16V Corsa that we use for taking the dog to the vet and taking stuff to the dump etc. We've had it for 4 years and in that time it's done just 6k miles and I changed the oil and filters etc. along with the cambelt when I bought it.

Last week I was bored so thought I'd change the oil and filters - It has done 106k

Used Halfords own brand part synthetic oil along with their own filters. Checked all other fluid levels and they were all fine. Nothing concerning under the filler cap or on the dip-stick either.

However, I have noticed that upon starting the engine from cold, there is now a noticable puff of blue smoke (large enough to see it in the mirrors, let alone from outside the car) - I'm sure it diddnt do that before?

Any ideas?

Have you used oil of a different viscosity? Heard tales of older/faulty cars being filled with thicker oil but not sure if this really works.

What grade did you use? 5W30 or 10W40?

Does it smoke whilst you are driving it? If not there must be oil seeping into the cylinders whilst its stood (Guessing its stood for a few days at a time if its just the dog car?)

As said, what visc. oil did you use, and what was in it before?

It was 10W/40 that I used. Not noticed anything whilst driving, certainally nothing once it's been for a drive and then left to idle.

Its not over-filled either.

Puff on startup after being sat for a while is probably valve guides

ETA - I meant stem seals

If it's only happening when it's started up (especially from cold), I would be leaning towards worn Valve stem seals.

A small amount of piss (50mL) will mix well with the oil and make it like the old oil you had.

The pissonase enzyme reacts with the alkanes and assists laminar flow.

eeeek help..... checked my renault master td35 for oil in engine and it needed topping up but think i may have over filled it. started engine and thick white smoke came out with a burning smell from exhaust. will it be safe to drive thanks.

How much did you overfill it?

not too sure as it awkward to get at as seat have to come out and engine in cab . got someone coming to look at it thursday , he reckons it needs bleeding. its had a new engine and gearbox so just hoping thats all be done right.
