I have a year 2000 VW Polo 1.4SE, I was wondering what mods would be best to make to improve the acceleration, handling, horse power and top speed? also what price range would I be looking at for each mod and how would it improve the performance of the car.

Would be grateful for any advice that could be given to me.

Thanks.

Sell it and buy a faster car. Your insurance will go up anyway with modifications so may aswell buy something else faster and in a higher group. Buy a Golf GTI.

Is it the 75/100bhp engine?

Id start with some coilovers, but try joining clubpolo for ideas

Get the money you are going to spend on modifying it out in 10 quid notes.

Get a bill fold.

Walk around like a pimp for a day.

Really there is no point modifying these engines and if you are going to do anything to it buy second hand parts that people have already taken a hit from. Really though with 2000 odd Ibiza Gtis and so on being 500 quid and easy to insure doing up a 1400 polo doesnt make sense.

This.

When you take into account the cost of the modifications, labour costs (unless you fit them yourself), insurance as mentioned above, it's alot more cost effective to just buy a faster car.

there is no such thing as cheap performance, especially with N/A power. if your serious, you will need to research aftermarket camshafts, manifolds/exhaust systems etc possible throttle bodies but for you to see real gains i guess it would set you back approx 2k... other options are engine conversions but again not cheap... if you want to have more fun just strip it, put a light set of buckets in there, coilovers and some sticky tyres and you'll have plenty of fun

Op, I have the Polo Gti of your age car and there is very little you can do increase horsepower but if you really want to improve the car then handling and brakes would be worth looking into. Check polo net forums out.

However as some people have said you may want to save for a faster car instead. I can highly recommend mx5's and mr2's.

Nothing wrong with making a good car handle or move better buy why throw money at a shopping trolley when it really will still only be a shopping trolley! The op imho would be better saving his money for a faster car in the first place.

I have one of these I use for the trip into work every day. I don't thrash it because it's not even remotely pacey if you do so I get a fair few MPG's out of it. If I fancy a hoon I just take the Golf Gti instead!!

Just reading that listing, apparently it can improve the handling too, so no need to buy coilovers biggrin
