I wouldn't be surprised if big US V8s play this game well with there high torque / gearing.
once up to speed mine is happy doing 25mpg (monaro 6.0 V8)He seemed surprised and asked when the changed it from a van to a big car. He looked at me like I didn't know what I was driving.
I died a little inside.

Cruising at 70 vs 80 in mine is a 10% difference in fuel ecconomy, 5mpg or so.
Quite possibly - gearing may ensure that it is optimisedfor cruising at slower speeds.
However, mine's build for hammering up & down the
autobahns all day every day, so it gets pretty good fuel
economy at high speeds.
90 mph is 3k rpm and 120 mph is 4k rpm, so not exactly working hard.
BTW, I collected some numbers from my last trip
from UK to Austria to share the real world with you.
Home to Dover. Max 85 ish mph, average 31 mpg, average speed 64 mph
Mostly on autopilot, so high average mpg.
Calais to Luxembourg. Max 95 ish mph, average 32 mpg, average speed 64 mph
Slightly faster top speed, but still on autopilot.
Luxembourg to near Munich. Max 141 mph, average 27 mpg, average 68 mph
When I wasn't waiting for lorries to get out the way,
I went pretty fast.
near Munich to Austria. Max 130 mph, average mpg 29, average 33 mph
Traffic jams caused a low average speed.
Austria to Ruhrgebiet. Max 150 mph, average mpg 26, average 69 mph
I thrashed the living daylights out of the car this day.
The accelerator was basically an on / off switch with lots
of visits into the red line.
Pity my average didn't improve much - those lorries and
other traffic do get in the way.
Ruhrgebiet to Calais. Max 140 mph, average mpg 29, average 56 mph
back in autopilot mode.
Calais to home. max 85 ish mph, average 29 mpg, average 58 mph.
more autopilot.
Numbers collected by Shirley the sat nav and the fuel computer,
so should be pretty accurate.
Conclusion: worst case scenario 6 mpg, average case scenario
3 mpg.
If I kept it below 120 mph and didn't thrash it, I reckon
2 mpg difference between cruising at 80ish mph and 120 mph
would be entirely feasible.
That's the real world for you. QED.

Quite an old topic though it came as 1st when I googled that so I'm gonna add sth from my experience. An importance notice, 80% of distance driven ~115-125mph according to gps in phone had place in Poland, I believe traffic is much lower here but from 7am to 9-9.30pm even >30-50km (~20-30mi) its usual to have to brake down to 56mph (90kph - trucks' built-in speed limit) when such a truck decides to overtake sth (usually another one going 0,5mph slower)
At night - 10pm to ~6am - its quite empty and on 80% of highways and it happens once or twice per 200-400km/125-250mi usually.
With Mazda 6 wagon (is it the proper word?) 1st gen, after FL, '07 2.0 diesel engine with 143hp/360nm it showed to use 11,5-12,5l/100km (18.8-20.5mpg) in given moment, and 12.5-14l/100km (18.8-16.8mpg) for whole ride (200+ km/125+ mi) at night, 14-15.5l/100km (16.8-15.2mpg) in the daytime though it was 110-120mph when cruising and 95-100mph on avg (had to accelerate like 15-30x/200km (125mi) from 55mph all the time and low power didn't allow for more, as well as traffic sometimes forced me to go 100-105mph for 20-30km/200km (12.5-18.5mi per 125mi) and sometimes I just decided its not safe to go over 110mph
Curb weight was 1605kg/3540lbs, with 20-50l of fuel and trunk's content - sth like 150lbs - plus me, another 70-80kg/155-175lbs, it was sth like 1750kg/3850lbs.
Fuel usage according to car was +/-2-3% the same as calculated after refuelling what was checked by me most of the time.
Bonus: once, when it was raining quite heavily for ~10 or more hrs, at typical for me 115-125mph (more like 120-125mph then) it was 10.5l/100km (22.4mpg) in given moment and avg at 220km/~135-140mi was 11l/100km (21.4mpg)
