100Mph+ on an empty day motorway at night is perfectly safe, if not legal.
Is 30Mph outside a school in a 30Mph zone at kicking out time, in the rain & dark REALLY safe? one is legal, one isn't.......

Rules are for wise men to be guided by.......and fools to follow !!!!

Not sure about the big engined solutions. My old Rover 216 coupe with a tall 5th gear would happy sit at 1.1 leptons whilst returning late 20s mpg.

Tried it have you? I'm fairly sure it's not very likely.

I feel 120mph is often safely achievable for short stretches even at peak times on parts of my commute (M5).

Focus ST seems to cruise at ~22mpg at those speeds. It doesn't get much more than that with normal driving on A roads.

I'm thinking the Passat Bluemotion might be a contender. Should be quite slippery as they have all the little tweeks to reduce the drag. (Narrow tyres, undertrays etc). And they have a higher ratio top gear.

Sorry, but that is simply untrue. I do the vast majority of my miles on the motorway sitting at 65-70mph. Driving at that speed I get to see the relative speed of all those overtaking me and the vast majority pass by very slowly. Anyone doing 90mph+ stands out like a sore thumb. Since the recession hit I think the number of people slowing down has significantly increased as we have all become more aware of the cost of petrol. It's only the people who drive at 90mph+ who think that speed is the norm. It isn't.

Not in my experience it's not. I do agree that traffic seems to have slowed since the recession but I still think the majority of cars at least drive at roughly an indicated 90-something-mph.

Not all motorways are the same though. The Welsh section of the M4, or M50, seems to have a much lower average speed than most of the M1 or the east end of the M62 for example.
I'm sure you're right that location does play a big part in achievable cruising speed. On the M20, M2, M25, M4, M3 and M25 where I spend most of my time I seldom see someone really pressing on.

I think you'll find that regularly driving at 120mph in the UK will get you banned unlessly you are very lucky never to pass a police car. And the OP (who definitely posted this to wind everyone up) suggested that this speed was going to be maintained for long periods and not the "short stretches" you mention. This isn't about what is safe and what isn't. It's about the stupidity of worrying about fuel economy when driving at very high illegal speeds.
How many police cars do you see in a year? I could count them on my fingers, of one hand in some years.

I don't see why having some concern for fuel economy when you're driving at 70mph is less stupid than at 120mph.

Dont rule out the newer 20d engines. Below is a screen shot after 1500 miles - some of which was allegedly done at significantly more than the OP's cruising speed. Half of it we had 2 bikes on the roof mounted vertically on bike racks which crucified the economy. Despite all this we still nearly managed 40mpg...

Given I overtake about 1/2 the cars on the M5 when doing 70. And the vast majority of the rest only passes me a little faster (75-80 ish). I find it's the same on the M6/M40/M25/M54 as well.

The majority of people are driving between 65 and 80. Probably only the top 5% or something like that are doing 90 or above.

Certainly the statement "80% of drivers on the motorway network do 90Mph+" bares no relation to what I see on the roads.

Why are all these road angels harping on?

If she wants to drive at 120mph on a deserted motorway let her. Shes the one risking her licence not you.

Personally i think speed limits on a motorway between 8pm and 6am are a waste of time...

Fact is that at late night or early morning 90mph is a very achievable cruising speed, even on the M25.

Dare I say it but i find driving standards are higher at night. Theres no such thing a a 'middle lane moron' as everyone is in L1 until they reach a lorry, Doris and Bob arent sitting in their Jazz at 55mph in the outside lane admiring the view. No traffic wombles at 56mph with retards doing 57mph past them as they dont know the national speed limit.

Anyways... Fair play to your mate for using the road as its intended. Sorry I cant comment on what car but i have no experience driving at such speeds for any lenght of time to care about fuel consumption. I'd have thought big low geared diesel saloon, Mabye an Audi A8?

Unfortunately its untrue IME too.

I tend to sit at 84 these days and I see approx 5 cars go past me on an average 100 mile trip.

I was in my van the other day at 7pm and was driving at a true 70 on the M42 and was overtaking everything I kept looking around to see what I was missing but there was no reason, just lane one was doing 55ish and lane 2 65ish

Surely it's an academic question? What configuration of car will return the best fuel consumption cruising at 50 metres per second. Discuss.

To be fair to the OP I didn't hear them demmanding it returned 40mpg or stating that it was safe. It was just a quetion of what would be (relatively speaking) more economical. smile
