Any big and formerly expensive car at this kind of age and mileage is going to be potentially costly. The X5 may be more reliable but if it breaks the bills will be big. The Rangey will break, there's no question about it. My Mother in Law's P38 spent 6 months at the LR dealer when it was still under warranty - an absolute money pit. A pal bought one a few months back and almost every week is on the net looking for replacement bits.

Proceed with caution with either, but I'd still take the X5.

We had one of the first shape ML's (facelift - the ones built in Austria not the US). Which we bought 18mths old with around 20K on the clock and took to 120K and apart from the interior trim falling apart and replacement injectors as it got older very little else went wrong with it other than consumables... Didnt spend a cent on suspension or drivetrain. I know it's not fashionable. Doesnt drive brilliantly. And is widely criticised. But if you wanted something German in that price bracket that wouldnt screw you completely then it is worth considering.

...in fact I've remembered more stuff on the X5.. replaced Catalytic convertors.. originals would have been £1500 but went for aftermarket.... the list goes on...

don't regret owning the X5... but if the OP has £5K-£10K to spend have they budgeted the £2-3K pa it might cost to keep it on the road?

As for P38 RR's..I have no personal experience other than a boss of mine a few years back had one new and it was for ever in the garage. Had a new engine iirc at sub <50K miles too.

Hmm....

I guess the thing is people with problems will always be more vocal than those without!

That's not a criticism of anyone on here by the way, it's just if you have had problems then obviously you will want to warn others, but anyone who hasn't had problems probably won't say anything!

The 3.0D makes the most sense in many respects but it sounds like there is more to go wrong (turbo's, etc) on that than on the V8's.

Decisions, decisions...

I'm with Blue. A poverty budget car like this needs to be reliable to avoid massive bills. The only choice therefore is an Amazon V8 with LPG, understressed with the potential for 1/4 million miles without significant expenditure (if you're lucky).
Landcruiser Amazon all day long.

X5's and Range Rovers at the age your budget dictates are going to require expenditure at some stage and it is likely to be eyewatering.

A well maintained Landcruiser is unlikely to throw any major suprises, will depreciate far slower than the other two and strangely IMHO is a far classier looking vehicle. (you will look like an aspiring farmer rather than a council tenant who can get finance) smile

Sorry, I don't like Landcruisers (or any of the Japanese 4x4's for that matter, the new Mitsubishi Outlander aside) so that's a no-go. Plus its too big for my carport - the X5 and P38 just fit in!!

Going back to the P38's, I could afford a nice late model in a very high spec - was the build quality better on later models? And given they were nigh-on 80k new, and they're not as old, hopefully they've been maintained well! E.g: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...

Ideally, what bits on a P38 should I look to have been replaced already?

Still not crossed the X5 off the list, of course...

Had my 3.0 X5 since new, touch wood - no problems at all.

Getting 32 - 35 mpg on the motorway. Much better put together then the Range Rover.

Don't discount a Lexus RX300, my brother has just bought one after looking for an X5 intially. The Lexus is far classier and more modern inside. Drives very well and has all the toys. My brother sat in the Lexus and then the X5 and binned the X5 off straight away.
9K will see you in an 03 plate Lexus as opposed to ropey X5 of very old Rangey.....just my 2p

I have an Fullfat 4.4 on gas. I had a 4.6 P38 on gas four or so years ago.
Had a few problems with the P38 maybe £2K over two years above the normal servicing

My current is great.

EU - that's a 3.0D I take it?

Phil - thanks for the suggestion! I really hate the looks of the Lexus if I'm honest, but will take a look at one. EDIT - JUST LOOKED AT ONE AND THEY ARE HIDEOUS, INSIDE AND OUT, SO NO THANKS!!

Jem - sounds like you're the ideal person to talk to then! Given you have owned both, which would you recommend to me and why??

Ah sorry the 4.4 I have now is a Range rover.
But I strongly advise that you drive all on the wish list.
I took an X5 out and found it crashy in comparison to the L322 Rangey.
I took a chipped TD6 (JE engineering) on a drive still found wanting on performance and sound.
The best was a Supercharged Rangey. Fantastic but too risky as it was leggy at 125k miles.
An LPG converted BMW engined Rangey is a great car.
I love every journey and it's good fun of the beaten track.

Enjoy whatever you get.

Aaah, beg your pardon.

You see, ride quality put me off buying an X3, but I think the X5 is fine.

So what went wrong on the P38?

Holy 7 year thread resurection warning!

I wonder what the OP went with in the end?

I find myself with exactly the same dilema, Range Rover 4.6 or X5 4.4? It is a bit like head says X5 but heart says Range Rover. Either way it must be V8. Budget bit tight so looking at 2000-2002 Range Rover or maybe slightly newer X5.
Do not think I could quite stretch to the more powerful facelifted X5 4.4 though. If I could then that would be the one to have I think.
Am in Spain, where used cars command high prices compared to the UK.

Anyone any recent experience with either of these models?

Yes this is dam near 5 years old biggrin

I have an 02 L322 TD6 the one with old straight 6 bm lump and Cadbury's box, while it's nice to drive yes it has it's issues. Would I have another RR, nope, would I have an older X5, never driven one so can't say.
