Currently reading Flat Out Flat Broke by Stig 1, different world, even in the 90s. Some funny tales though.

All depends on whether he gets in the right car or not. In the old days a good enough driver could make up for any deficiencies in the car, currently it's all but impossible. Fangio, Moss, Clark, Stewart, Lauda etc, if they were in F1 now, could find themselves stuck at the back of the grid if they made a wrong choice of team.
And to be fair, Moss, Stewart and Lauda are getting on a bit...

Lando to join McLaren for 2019.;
Great news. I still believe he will be the next British World Champion after Lewis.

Not if George Russell gets a decent drive he won't be, it annoys me that all the hype is about Norris, he won the first race of the season and hasn't won since, Russell has won five races since then.

Agree. Thought it would be Lando a few years ago as he was getting a lot of hype and to be fair results. I feel it's gone to his head a little bit. George Russell seems like a much more complete driver and fairly humble. I have high hopes.

If you compared LN's earlier career with GR's, you'd probably be in the same boat as me - LN is not a surprise, GR a big one. GR's earlier career has been far less spectacular, even average but since getting in with ART he's been transformed. So one wonders how good ART are as a team? Sure GR has blown away all his ART team mates in GP3 and F2 and indeed the whole field. Maybe GR has just reached that point where everything is starting to click?

OTOH LN is with Carlin which are not as good at setup as ART it seems, but also, LN hasn't been blowing Sette Camara away. In fact on pace it could be the reverse. Sette Camara is good no doubt, but LN needs to blow him away like he's done to everyone else in lower formula. In WEC LN was able to lap faster than Alonso in the same car, so he certainly has it.

I think the form for both LN and GR in F2 has ebbed and flowed based on who is defending the championship lead and who is chasing it. Both have class-leading racecraft though.

The good news is for GR is the driver:car weight regs for F1 are changing. He's way too big to be a top F1 driver, but maybe not in the future...

Either way, I think the future is pretty bright for Britian! smile

Hopefully Russell will be promoted soon and we will have two talented new Brit drivers to cheer for in F1.

Tricky to always tell who is the best driver in the lower formulas as the teams are so important. Even when they do get into F1 past success is no guarantee of future success as a Vandoorne can testify.

Whichever way you look at it they've both done well but knowing the way the British public seem to be these days it will end up being tribal "you can't like one without hating the other" type affair.

Can Albon become officially British again too? Wasn’t he just Thai for sponsorship initially.

Won't it be Lewis Hamilton again?

I can't see Button or Will Stevens doing it.

Next in line might be someone new like George Russell.
Looks like George is going to struggle becoming world champion in that Williams this year.

As would a composite of Moss, Clark, Stewart and Hamilton.

Maybe Alex Lynn, I thought Seb Morris a few years ago after watching him in the Ginetta Juniors. Lando Norris seems a good shout too.
I was wrong with the first two... Norris or Russell obviously the best bets at the moment.

Who is coming up behind them then? Callum Ilott just had a win in F2.. Ticktum?.. I like Aitken and the work he does with various social media outlets, not sure he has the potential for the very top?

Who are the kids in karting at the moment?

I was slightly wrong too. Amazing how many people said Alex Lynn, what's he up to now? Last I heard he was doing GT's with Aston Martin.

I would counter that Stirling Moss was good enough but never had the right car, didn't help himself by insisting on driving British cars though (of course he did finally agree to drive a Ferrari, run by Rob Walker's team and painted dark blue, sadly a month before he was due to debut the car Goodwood happened).

The Maserati 250F and Mercedes W196 he drove between 1954 and 1957 weren't British cars.
