"1" was an honor bestowed on the champ and everyone racing, announcing or watching at the circuit would know "that's the Champion!" when they drove past. It must have been a different experience only knowing the positions as they thundered past your part of the circuit and relying on a commentator for the rest!

To be fair, I’m not sure he’s having a pop at hamiltOn; just stating a general view on the use of ‘1’.

But yes, who cares what number is on the car... not sure a number should be mandatory either.
Not having a pop at Hamilton at all as you have stated.

Still would love to see the number one on the Champions car

44 could be put on so many different parts but keep the nose and rear wing number 1.

But it's a drivers decision.

Exactly.

Number one for number one.

It should be an honour to use that number.

But perhaps brand is more important.

Remembered when Ferrari ran numbers 27 and 28 from 1981 until 1995/1996.

Fans always seem to enjoy his antics and they seem to be at every Race. No doubt some will find fault with him but he is a fantastic representative and a continuation of great British F1 drivers

I do! I also remember Hill running with Zero and Mansell with Red Five. Strangely I can't remember either with the 1 on their bonnet.

In any case, my point wasn't that the old days were better, but rather that in pre-television days it probably had more practical meaning to the average casual race-goer and is really an anachronism. These days I generally go by car and helmet colour when I'm watching TV.

Senna and Hill ran 2 and 0 as Prost had retired and was the current Champion after 1993.

Hill, however, did use the number one when he left Williams for Arrows.

Mansell never got to run the number 1 as Prost took his place at Williams in 1993 so he went to Indy Car.

Mansell did run the number one in Indy Car. smile

Not really a massive fan of hollywood types in F1, but this raised a smile.

Not a big fan of Hamilton the "celeb" but he earned a bit of respect from me for his genuine concern and interest in Billy monger as shown recently on the BBC. Was a really nice touch for him to go see him and get involved.

I get the feeling Lewis suffers from some mental health issues. He displays a lot of the classic signs of suffering from anxiety. He's always fidgeting, he can often seem aloof and socially awkward and I don't think he has any real close relationships outside of his immediate family. He's certainly not the same charismatic character he was when he was much younger, but we do get flashes of it. The video with Will Smith from this weekend was like fun loving Lewis of old.

Back the racing. He dominated this season, completely. Even when on the odd occasion it was all going wrong he shrugged it off like a man who knew nothing could stop him. Silverstone was the only real blip when his disappointment clearly got the better of him.

For me there's no doubt he's one of the all time greats now. He's racked up some impressive records while remaining one of the most fair and respected drivers while behind the wheel. A very impressive feat in any competitive environment.

Mental issues... FFS, seriously!!!
I’d say the same thing if you’d said the same thing about Max, Vettel, Bottas etc...
We’re all different. People read so much into things... socially awkward! Kimi can barely string a sentence together but that’s fine. It’s the Finnish nature. Lewis doesn’t particularly like public speaking. He’s just different to your idea of how you think someone should be. Me, I just take people as I find them.

Yes, he’s been a big supporter of Billy, and made sure he’s had ringside seats on numerous occasions now.

I really don't know what Hamilton does in his time out of the Car but it does seem to upset a lot of people.
He is a British Driver to add to our list of great F1 champions and he will hopefully inspire more champions of the future.
I am not sure any other driver could have done more than he has done since the Summer break he was simply in a different class to the rest of the grid it was just a pleasure to watch him drive .

It is a privilege to see him drive. Attending Silverstone a few years on the trot; the support he has with real motorsport fans is just unbelievable... I don’t know why he upsets others, as you say. But at the track; he’s loved and respected in great measure.

A friend told me that, even though he’s been massively popular outside of the UK, especially in the America’s and Asia, there was always a strong anti Hamilton contingent in parts of Europe; but even they, apparently, are coming around. Italian press for example; have been quite vocal about Vettel’s failings and have said that Hamilton in the Ferrari, would have gotten them the championship.

Hamilton in a Ferrari would be interesting but he is a Merc man to the end I think. I want him to win again next year but I want a good season with maybe 3 or even 4 challenging for the WDC. We can live in hope.
I find it funny people slag him off for praising and thanking the fans at different tracks or his tat's or his hair but never his driving.

People won't ever admit it, but being involved in black culture doesn't help his cause with some. Imagine that, a black guy into black culture...ridiculous! rolleyes

That’s because there’s an awful lot of pretty racist European countries still.

I share your view.

Obviously with Ferrari being his closest rival he would'nt be showing any interest in driving a red car (mind games and all that...) But I don't think he'll ever go there either.

Out of interest does anyone know if Hamilton owns any Ferraris in his private garage?
