He famously said it.

Many people are aware he said it on many occasions.

Not sure he invented it.

Which just isn't correct smile

As for where 'first of the losers' came from.. surely that sentiment has been expressed in similar ways and no doubt occasionally the exact same wording, pretty much since competitive sport was created?

I love the saying, it's absolutely correct. Schools aren't really allowed to motivate kids with such wisdom these days, in case they're offended and explode in to a million pieces as a result.. Whatever, what is interesting is that the current crop of young F1 drivers all seem very well adjusted and confident - and they've been told winning is all that matters since before their 10th birthday. Just imagine how much winning it takes to get as far as consideration for an F1 seat! Winning: it definitely matters.

True... But on the other hand doesn't that just prove private schooling is worth the money? Or that state schools are not getting right - depending on how you look at it..?

Anyway. My point was that there is something very healthy about seeking to win - essentially forces you to be at your very best, even if you don't actually manage to be first. As Lewis would say "I hate losing". That's not a particularly bad ethos to apply to just about anything endeavoured in life. If you don't believe you can win it, why are you doing it? Go do something else!

I am a product of private schooling and don't really care much about winning at all. I do think it is an admirable trait in sportspeople though, and totally necessary for them.

I'm not saying everyone should be privately schooled or needs to be winning focused. But I do think the modern soft society doesn't really help achievement in various ways..

Back to topic though - Lewis has done fairly well for himself career wise, and I would admit he could hardly have done any better if he had been schooled differently biggrin

I don’t think everyone from private school think themselves winners, just that most think they are better than everyone else. So if that mindset has been bred into you you won’t consider that the other (drivers) are better, you will simply believe you yourself are. Whilst I don’t think it’s a nice trait, I’m sure it helps in things like competitive sport as I presume it takes away self doubt.

Being the product of the state system I wouldn’t know!

I'm the product of the state system too - and it hasn't affected my life one way or the other, left school at 14 so not too much damage done..

Total shambles though. They had Acorn computers and IT was an in general an afterthought. I asked the IT teacher one day why they didn't use industry standard computers to teach us IT: "because Acorn gives us computers for free". It was the same in various other subjects and it wasn't long until I realised the state education system was about 10 years behind reality. I left to wash cars and walk dogs, I have worked for myself ever since.

Although I do believe a winning spirit is very important. I also believe that quite often, cheating is for winners (sad reality). I'm not sure how Ferrari have managed to cheat their way to losing though. Christ only knows where they would be if they had played it all straight.

FWIW, that's not the case IME, as the product of both and with kids I expect to only be state schooled. It's a long time before kids in the private sector are even aware there's anything different about their school and actually there isn't that much difference - they don't get made to write out lines of Chesney Hawkes lyrics. The issue is almost the reverse.

Eventually they'll hear the sort of comment you've made there and it shows what, at least in sport, is a weakness. I watched an interview on YouTube this week with Antony Joshua and Ruiz Jr and AJ made the point that he wasn't looking at Ruiz' game, he couldn't influence it, he could only improve his own game. It's standard, solid, advice to do so, but I don't think the reason he says as much is for any other reason than to convince Ruiz and himself that Ruiz isn't living rent free inside his head. To admit as much is to lose that edge.

My kids probably won't experience the private school system. I'll still be telling them to do their best and not worry about how other people approach sport, or other aspects of their life where it's applicable.

I am sat here in a room full of fairly decent engineers, most of whom learned on an Acorn. It was an excellent platform for teaching computing and a rare example of a state sponsored project going well (based on anecdotal research in this office). Think of it more like a 747 pilot first learning in a Cessna or something rather than using a simple computer.

To keep in Hamilton I am pretty sure I read he learned his IT skills on an Acorn Electron, he wanted a BBC model B but all the family money went into his karting career. At his private sixth form they had PCs (probably)

I would be amazed if he left for Ferrari in 2021. Maybe he will sign a one year deal with Mercedes in 2021 to see how the car is with the new regulations and then make a move in 2022.

Why lose Championships when you are in the best package and team.

Things change very quickly when new regs appear. I think who ever he signs for in 21 will be the team he finishes his career with.

A new team will want a commitment from him and won’t agree to a 1 year “let’s see how it goes” contract.

Possibly. But as a team manager would you want the best driver on the grid for 1 year or not at all?

I think if Toto leaves merc lewis will leave in the same year regardless if that is before or after 2021.

Ferrari rumours are circulating well now so I wouldn't at all be surprised to see him sign in 2021 especially if he is 2020 wdc... and as soon as he does I'm booking my ticket for monza.

I agree.

Mercedes would be happy to have Hamilton in the car even if it was for just a one year contract. This will keep the team on their toes as well to get him to sign again.

Not like Mercedes aren't good at advancing already.

But as you say if Toto leaves Mercedes might not be the same team moving forward. The one weekend he took off and things went pretty wrong.

Perhaps Ferrari needs to sign Toto and Hamilton.

Does anyone agree that Hamilton not having a wife and child is better for him mentally when racing?

I do wonder if this is the reason Vettel has lost his edge.

No. that was Red Bull that had the edge, he was just the driver at the time.

Correct. And Mercedes has had the edge since 2014.

We know Hamilton is slightly faster than Bottas.
If he moves to Ferrari we will see if Lewis is slightly faster than Charles.

He’s slightly faster than Bottas when Bottas is at his best which isn’t all the time.

Hamilton is always there or there abouts.

That’s where he excels.
