Great read, Mark Hughes has a wonderful insight into F1, and with the f1 (official FOM) journalism credentials, and the guy that’s in the ear of the SKY/FOM (Brundle/Crofty) live broadcast, its fair to say he has his finger on the pulse...LaurasOtherHalf said:

I don't have any real theory as to why it was there - but it's F1 so it's there for a reason and it's interpretation will definitely have been considered by Mercedes

Next year's car won't be next year's car until FP1 in Adelaide, they've got months of development yet!

It was placed in the background a bit too much to be the WO7.

Competent drivers can get within a very small margin of a top pro like lewis without shaking, the difference is not from stting yourself, its the lack of ability to get that tiny margin out of the equipment.
Good level drivers do not get out of a car having pushed to their limit having scared themselves, thats simply not on the agenda.
If you are getting out of cars having crapped your pants, you are doing it wrong.
As a competent club racer (circuit, sprints and hills) I strongly disagree with this. Putting in a properly fast lap is for me a very intense experience. Not at the time because you’re very focussed, but after I’ll get out of the car shaking, particularly on the hills. Maybe it’s the proximity of the trees. I don’t think it’s just me, I’ve shared assembly areas with 20+ drivers fizzing with nervous energy prior to taking the grid, it’s not pleasant. I do agree that there are some very talented club racers, maybe 5% or less of the entry, They are beyond competent though. I've had to wake some drivers up as they fell asleep strapped in the car, others are so chilled you have to make sure they dont miss the session by chatting to mates. The really quick drivers are properly chilled out before and after, the concentration levels during their driving stint is seriously high though.
The racing duelling with some top drivers is exciting and gets the heart rate going during that of course, but thats not the same thing as being nervous or scared.
My own driving in competition only really gets nervous when I'm driving an unfamiliar car that has some dodgy traits to dial out, so you are not certain what the thing will do. Once thats sorted its all nice and calm. It's particularly fun competing in the wet where you can see a lot of drivers stting bricks, they have lost before a wheel has turned. I sorted that aspect of driving out by having proper driver coaching at wet testing venues.
I think a lot of this nervousness is down to crap cars, i earn my living making very quick racing cars easy to drive and consistently predictable. Take the uncertainty out and a decent driver shouldn't be scared or shaking.

If they have a 2020 car built, I’d be amazed.Great video BTW.
Most likely a 2019 at best.

Several designers have said that the hardest part is deciding when to rubber stamp the final design for the new season, it's always as last minute as possible. Or In Williams case this year.. slightly later than possible.

Interesting, thanks for the insight. Sort of agree with most of what you say, but I’ve never met a racer who doesn’t have increased heart rate while competing and an adrenaline high after a race. I can believe that the top 5% of club racers are unstressed before they race, they also rarely make mistakes or crash. I too have nearly missed sessions chatting but I will get out of the car shaking, particularly on the hills, maybe because their is so little room for error and you get so little practice. I’ve set class records and won championships so I’m competent but certainly beatable and would say in the group I occupy (from 5% down to maybe 40% of a grid or entry) there is a lot of nervousness Beyond the top 40-50% in a class they are probably not going fast enough to be nervous🙂. Hope that last bit doesn’t sound too arrogant, I’ve only ever done class based racing so accept single make racing may be a lot closer and I do think that anyone who competes is amazing. Also agree with what you say about the car, used to compete in a Radical Prosport which was incredibly forgiving, if you made a mistake (oversteer on corner entry for example) it didn’t cost much time. I’m now in a Lotus Exige V6 which for me is a knife edge car, make the same mistake and I might as well coast to the finish, the Lap time is gone. I should probably pay you to help set it up better🙂.
