Given they have a contract with Sauber...? Yes for 2018... after, who knows? Too much face to be lost.
Its a good move for Honda, No-one looks or expects much of Sauber and so Honda can develop and fail out of the limelight

Boulier looked ecstatic! maybe not....

I think based on that reaction they have already decided its over.

It was interesting seeing during the race how close the performance of the Honda unit seems to be to last year's Ferrari one in the Sauber. I suppose that does, to an extent, put into perspective how difficult it is playing catch-up as they are.

Alonso had the right idea, if they'd had the same engine in they did on Friday they could have been up on the podium. Probably more pissed about loosing points than gaining those few.

The Sauber had the initial jump but Alonso had DRS out of turn 2 and maybe whatever electric boost he could use.

He wouldn't have finished is the more likely scenario as the Friday spec engine went bang.

The gearbox went bang. The engine went back for testing because it got over-revved as a result.

Vandoorne had the old spec engine.
Ah ok, I thought they were both running the new one. Might be a good improvement coming then once they decide to run it full time.
If I'm not wrong, FP1 they ran the PU with a higher df setup. Vmax in the main straight was ~308 kph...a decent gain from previous. Took some wing off in FP2 to Baku levels and Alonso was Vmaxing at 328 kph through there without a tow (but with DRS). Vandoorne presumably as a comparison was Vmaxing around 10 kph slower with DRS.

Obviously no word on fuel efficiency and race mode top speeds as those laps were preceded with slow charge laps I believe, but this update is v. promising. FP1 might possibly been simulating race mode drag levels. This top speed is not a million miles away from the rest of the field. Can't wait for Austria. Hoping for better reliability though.

Or worse - if Honda improve its harder to divorce. As posted above, I think the little preview of the forthcoming update is promising. They also appear to have fixed the MGU-H bearing failure issue.

Worst scenario for McLaren is that Honda actually improve so that they regularly finish in the top 10. Good enough that they can't bail from the relationship, not good enough to challenge for podiums.

Tbh I don't want them to bail from Honda

They will improve and get there

You got to remember merc had been developing this engine from around 2011/2012 so it's now 5-6yrs of development and very powerful whereas Honda have been at it 3 yrs don't forget also Honda have had to learn from year 1 whereas merc could run and dyno the engine to the max for 2-3yrs before it sat in the actual car! I do t think Honda are doing too bad considering and if they can sort their issues next year even better

I'd like them to stick with Honda too. I'm sure they'll get it right and there are signs things are improving.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but apparently McLaren Honda have completed more laps in 2017 than Red Bull Renault.

Funny how no one is saying Red bull need to drop Tag-Heuer, er I mean Renault.

And yet Red Bull are still a country mile ahead of them on speed and points.

The Renault donkey can be a bit fragile, in Verstsppens car especially but it does at least have some grunt, and the Red Bull is likely to be a far better chassis than the Mclaren.

As some F1 driver once said 'I'd rather have a fast car that's unreliable than a slow car that's reliable'... (Using 'reliable' in its loosest sense of course).

It's generally easier to add reliability than to add speed. (Massive armchair enthusiast sweeping statement)

Sauber to be bought by Honda? Longbow get an easy out, Kaltenborn comes back in, Honda get to control at least one team's PR! Just a thought.

Yep and spend 5-7 years and hundreds of millions trying to build a winning car and as soon as they do, decide to quickly pull out of the sport and sell the team to Ross Brawn who wins the Championship that year... ridiculous could never happen biggrin

It probably would not have won with the Honda engine according to Ross B and Nick F - it was still not competitive, despite Hondas protestations.
