It'll be tbe boy who replaced Sainz in FP1 today. Can't remember his name.

Edit: his name is Sean Gelael

It won’t be Sean Geleal - he ran in the session today because he’s Indonesian. He is a very long way from being a viable F1 driver ...

Fair enough. I thought I heard them say he was going to be in FP1 for another 3 races this year.

He may well be and I’ve only wiki’d his career but he’s 15th in F2 at the moment with a best finish of 5th. Ahead of him are the likes of Charles Leclerc, Oliver Rowland, Nick de Vies and a few others with manufacturer baking of some sort. My guess would be Nobuharu Matsusta if it’s anyone other than Gasly who is currently part of the Red Bull program and driving a Mugen/Honda car in Japan at the moment.

ETA - what Towser said! Must type faster biggrin

Sean is a competent driver with a billionaire dad. Not inconceivable that Ricardo could buy an F1 team. He was in the frame for Manor.

I wonder if they are already trying to manage expectations down?

I think life for McLaren is about survival until the new regs. They will need a year to integrate with Renault (and the lubricants, etc)...

How high exactly are your expectations?
They're switching to Renault!

If I had a pound for every post saying what if Honda come good now next year...
Honda are like a runner in a 10000m race that are 2 laps down but somehow a brainless commentator thinks they will catch up running at the same speed or the other runners will stop and wait.

Wonder what the odds on Torro Rosso beating McLaren in the constructors next year are?
Well tactics wise they'll use Kvyat to torpedo Alonso so it will come down to Vandoorne vs Gasly.......could be close

Does anyone else find it slightly ironic that the first race after this announcement, Mclaren get one of their best finishes of the year with no engine problems and one of the Renaults' engine fails?

Which Renault engine failed? Was Hulkenberg's pneumatic issue a Renault PU problem?

Fair point, I don't think we know which end of the hydraulics failed.

According to Ted Kravitz after the race, it wasn't a pneumatic problem, but an oil leak and they were topping the thing up in the pits.

You're not allowed to top up the oil in the pits but even so the guy was clearly pumping air in during the pit stop. Possibly they had 2 issues?

A circuit with no long straights requiring full power like SPA... Alonso even said before getting to Singapore that it was a race he expected to get decent points in. Plus with the rain levelling things out, it's no surprise McLaren did well. Lets see where they are in Sepang... Longest straight, 927metres.
