I know people tend to prefer the cars of their childhood and I'm no exception as love those cars of the 70s.
I'm not so sure. I'm also a 70s child and I like the cars of the 60s, 70s, 80s and early 90s.

I've just had a thought:

If a car is involved in an accident which causes damage to the halo, will it then have to retire?

I'd have thought that any accident sufficient to do that would retire the car anyway.

Why don't all the drivers just stay in the pit garages and play chess? Would be a lot safer and a lot cheaper for all the teams aswell!

You can only ignore the fans for so long. Being locked behind a paywall will be the beginning of the end especially in the UK.

I hate Halo, it looks horrific and can't solve every problem. These photoshops don't actually look too bad though..

That's kind of what I was getting at earlier. So far all we've been is the ugly bolt-on prototype. When they're integrated into the design and liveried, they may not look quite as awful.

As nice as some of those look, I can't see how the driver would get in and out - especially in an emergency

The article did say that the artist was going for aesthetics over practicality, but I agree that the ones where the driver can't get out rather negate the effort in making the pic.

But the point still stands that once integrated into the design of the car, they're bound to look less clunky than the bolt-on prototype.

Yes, totally understand this was just a good visual exercise, and as you say the original working prototype was just a 'bolt on'... but the finished design (whatever that may look like) will be limited in it's esthetics by so many factors and possible emergency circumstances that I can't ever imagine it looking half decent...

...Just off the top of my head: it can't be 'quick release' - its got to be massively structural, yet it cant hinder a quick cockpit exit (even if the car is upside down)... and yet it's primary function is to form a protective shield.

That is a massive design challenge and I think the only area that could possibly compromised in finding that solution is the cars visual appearance (and even then areo dynamics need to be considered).

Or maybe its just my lack of vision smile

About all they can do is paint it.
It depends on how rigidly-defined it is. If it is a part that must be used "as is" like the HANS device then, yes, you are right.
If it is a set of regulations, like the car's monocoque safety cell, where it must be able to pass a test, then there is more scope for variance.

Safety issues aside, it's an ugly looking thing bolted onto the top of ugly looking cars.

Current F1 cars are certainly purposeful and have that aesthetic appeal, but you couldn't ever call them beautiful.

I don't much care either way, rapidly dwindling interest in this sport.

Oof, thats a rather sexy and unique looking thing. Very different and minimalist, looks stripped back.

I haven't seen that little wing on a car since the beginning of 1968.

If they'd only gone back another 6 months, it would have been perfect.

The cars of 1980/81/82 ran fairly small wings because they were getting most of their downforce from side pods and underfloor.

They even tried running cars with no front wings -

It's interesting how F1 and Indy have come up with wildly different solutions to safety issues. Both (I believe) the result of previous accidents.

I'm not saying either is wrong, but, being reactionary, it's likely that neither is the best solution.
