You're a F1 racer trying to raise your stock to maximise your F1 options from 2018 onwards. Monaco is the best race on the calendar to mask the deficit in your car. You have personal goals yo reach in lifetime stats.

Do you suddenly, having hardly ever mentioned it previously, go to your bosses and say "I'd like the weekend off", or do you fill your boots?

Brown has engineered a really cute promotional sitiation and should b appluaded fpr it. Alonso is doing what his boss tells him.

It's purely a commercial strategy. Alonso is doing as he's told (not necessarily unwillingly) by his employer.

You only have to read the press release comments attributed to Alonso to see this. Note the many references to Honda etc.

It's a great idea, but I would bet my month's wages it's not Alonso's.

Right... I can't recall the last time Fernando did what he was told, but you go with your conspiracy theory.

Do you not think he might be looking at his career and thinking, "I have run out of time to beat Michael S. I may have run out of time to beat Sebastien. But I could get the triple...and get to drive in F1?"

Now hoping Monster can sort out Lewis doing the Daytona 500. No clash so should be easier.

Really, really hoping this is the first of many F1 drivers doing other big races.
If anyone is going to jump in a NASCAR car, it will be at Sonoma or Watkins Glen. Marcus Ambrose used to specialise in those races (at least I think it was Ambrose). They were also the only places where JP Montoya had any real success too.

While I like the idea of this, I don't think it's at all likely.

Conspiracy? No consipracy here. Just McLaren using every tool in the box to gain some sponsorship.

They don't need Alonso so much that they have to grant him a weekend off (at Monaco, of all places).

Can anyone imagine Ron allowing it?

Maybe he has been asking for it for years - can you imagine Ron allowing it?

F1 being what it is, ramming the boot in to one now he is gone isn't done - make it sound like a new idea

Did anyone see the drivers conference? I went from thinking this was Alonso's decision to thinking it might be a McLaren decision. As in we're paying you loads of money and we need some return? He actually looked uncomfortable talking about it at the start.
Anyway, to complete the triple they're going to need Le Mans. So Alonso and Button in a McLaren?

If it were a team decision I'd assume they sounded Button out first for the Indy drive rather than ask their best driver to miss Monaco?

If you listen to the 5live podcast on the BBC website all is revealed, they interviewed Zak Brown. He was aware that Fernando had an interest in competing at the Indy 500 (triple crown...) but hadn't put a timeframe on it. Zak decided to investigate the possibility of doing it this year so he sounded out his contacts in the states (Andretti I presume) and when he realised it was doable he floated the idea with Alonso and Honda about taking part this season. He made it sound very much like with McHonda F1 struggling he could at least help Alonso with his Indy 500 ambition. I suppose he has a vested interest in keeping Fernando sweet. He acknowledged that he has 'a challenge' on his hands retaining Alonso beyond this season.

As I said, Zak is no fool.
