Alonso Missing Monaco to do Indy 500

Why do peopl think of Monaco as the jewel in F's crown? Bling aside, it's a st event. Boring as hell every year, unless it rains enough that everyone but a Tyrell crashes (and these days they'd just run it under safety car instead).
It's just the uniqueness of the event. Throws up the odd dramatic race, but generally it can be a procession. It's still a massive test for the drivers though and a spectacle to watch these cars at speed in a place like that.
Any other race series would bite their hands off to have a race of this profile on their calendar.
(Jewel in F1 crown is events like Spa for me though. The classic circuits.)

I rly hope jenson is in the car
Plus for sponsors surely they would want their world champion ambassador
Sponsors? After the "ooh it's a bit orange" colour scheme the next thing everyone say is "Where are the sponsors?".Plus for sponsors surely they would want their world champion ambassador
Jenson could be a good shout for a surprise result but 1 race in the year isn't good for being match fit.
As for Alonso & The Indy 500? Mad, lots to lose and not much to gain.
Maybe they could complete the swap and Stefan Wilson could take Alonso's place as it was he who gave up his Indy 500 ride for Alonso - http://www.crash.net/f1/news/243573/1/the-british-...
They only need someone to drive the car and do PR, it's hardly going to be challenging for wins or podiums is it.

Great news. Always have huge respect for F1 drivers crossing over to other disciplines and doing well. Just a cut above the F1 only ones. Jumping into a competitive car with no previous oval experience... Kudos.
By Monaco, I'm expecting Honda to improve massively with the next PU introduction. Button to sub at Monaco and finishing on the podium?

I bet jensons fitness is probably better than most of the grid! They're going to want experience are mclaren someone who knows Monaco and someone who's driven wider F1 cars before so they will be daft not to use him! I'd love to see hondas new engine and jb decimate
I'm a jb fan so naturally hope he races! I don't rate vandoorne at all
Bit of a surprise this, but an understandable one. Neither McLaren nor Alonso have anything to lose, and might gain a win
Jenson's ought to be a shoo-in for the drive. He's the only driver available to McLaren with Monaco F1 experience, and also has nothing to lose by coming back for a single race. Do badly = everyone knows the car is a dog, do well = heroic drive.
Actually, I wonder if this was all discussed prior to his "retirement" last year, and if he was kept on as a potential reserve driver for the team for just this eventuality. Wouldn't surprise me to discover that Alonso told the team last year that he would do Indy unless the F1 car was a whole lot better.

If we wins the Indy 500 (he may not do it at his first attempt) and then also Le Mans (similar), he'll be only the second driver in history to do it. That is a huge amount to gain, both professionally and personally.I wonder if Honda have a long term plan to try and win Le Mans themselves?

I disagree completely. There is nothing to lose really - miss one race (in a dustbin with wheels) that he has won twice already, in order to take part in one of the great icons of his sport (I like to think the drivers still have at least a little passion for their art!)...and if he doesn't do so well, ah it was his first time in a field of specialists. But if by some chance he does well...even wins...becomes first novice cross coder since the 60s to win at the brickyard - reputation enhanced massively. As for Alonso & The Indy 500? Mad, lots to lose and not much to gain.
You could have said the same about Hulkenburg in 2015 at Le Mans, and he came away with the biggest win of his career.
So - quite the opposite. I would say there is lots to gain and little to lose.
You know with the obvious 2007 issues aside i really am finding it hard to find any reason not to really like Alonso.
That man has balls and credit to MCL for letting him go do it - one suspects that this sort of flexibility will keep him for the rest of the season and might even help swing a new 12 month contract if the car can qualify for Q3 by the end of the year.
I would have loved to have seen JV do the triple but that isn't going to happen as he wasn't as fast as his team mates back in the pug days and is unlikely to be any faster these days, even if Toyota or Porsche found space for him. Alonso on the other hand - well aren't MCL looking at going back there...

Considering he just qualified for the 70.3 Ironman Triathlon World Championships (and was then disqualified, for going to fast!) I don't think fitness would even remotely be an issue. Particularly at Monaco which isn't a high G circuit.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
