Too early for a 2018 drivers thread?

Unsurprisingly Renault aren't happy going in to 2018 with only one driver scoring points. HAAS are currently matching Renault in the constructor's championship!

I would chuck him out, stick in JEV, Di Resta, Buemi, even Maldanado

There have been mutterings that he might be out before the end of the season, Buemi's name was mentioned I believe.

Last thing i read was that Renault were targeting Perez for 2018.

I thought he was fairly lucky to get the drive this year and should have stepped up to secure his place. Instead he's been an unmitigated disaster this year. Doesn't deserve his drive anymore - had his chance and blew it. We've lost far better drivers

What about Kimi for 2018?

His contract is up at the end of 2017.

I am sure however Vettel would love him to stay biggrin

There is Sainz and also Wehrlein has done well but I doubt Red Bull and Mercedes would allow.

I am sure Renault will be looking at Alonso to come back if McLaren continue to do rubbish but his clock is ticking and I doubt he would want to risk another team to build up.

Perez already turned them down which is why Hulkenberg got the drive. If Alonso doesn't go there they'll sign Sainz or pick up one of the two Mercedes young drivers.

Pure speculation I live within a 500 miles radius, and I have not heard him moaning or whining about it. Surely I would have if it was true??

They should bin Palmer (who just isn't cracking it, for whatever reason) and promote Ollie Rowland (who is also one of their development drivers).
Ollie won the Monaco F2 feature race this year.
Not a bad place to do it, in front of the corporate heads in the most French race of the year.

Try and get Pierre Gasly in the Renault seat for 2018.

  • 2016 GP2 (F2) Champion
  • Young and Fast
  • French
  • Toro Rosso reserve driver (who are a Renault customer team)
  • Red Bull don't have space for him at the moment so farm him out to Renault would be logical

I don't think you'll Paul DiResta back in a F1 Team any time soon.

Isn't he the reserve driver for Williams this year? So if anything prevents Stroll or Massa from racing for any reason then he'd be in there.

I think he has to go - he's just not performing as well as he should, for whatever reason. Likeable chap, and no doubt a very, very talented driver, just not in the top 0.000001% he needs to be in.

Could have said the same last year though... I was kind of surprised they chose him over Magnussen (although Magnussen was hardly amazing either).

He waded in with an offer the previous season that the cash strapped team couldn't afford not to take. Tied in to a cast iron contract that year too. This year they took him, seemingly, on merit. I think he'll stay for the remainder of the year and then off to Formula E

Agree - hardly stellar last year, but Hulk is a classy driver in a fairly dodgy car and is conducing himself in an Alonso-esque way, putting the car in places it just doesn't appear to merit. This just highlights JPs shortcomings. I'd say FE is a good bet. Like the idea of Gasly as a replacement too - a bit of good old nurturing before feeding him up to the big leagues. That said, Kvyat is hardly setting the world on fire, so there are a couple of options there for PG too.

Sainz seems pretty keen to get out of STR and into a bigger team. Unless he can get himself into RBR, which seems unlikely for next year unless Ricciardo makes a move, then he's got to be high up on teams' shopping lists. Sainz to Renault and Gasly to STR could be an option. It depends how deep are Le Regie's pockets.

Doesn't preclude Perez to Renault 2018 though (as suggested in the article in the OP).

I'd agree that Hulkenberg has been superb throughout, I hope his persistence pays dividends- however nobody seems to rate Perez. Hulkenberg did not embarrass Perez in the way he is embarrassing Palmer. Hulk / Perez a la Force India -2016 is an enviable line-up.

I'm all for new drivers but there are a number of drivers on the grid who are ripe for a top drive. Palmer is one of those who can make way. If Raikkonen goes we could have some proper musical chairs.

I reckon Mercedes will want to give Wehrlein an upgrade after overlooking him for 2017. Perhaps there's room for Palmer at Sauber.

What is Ericsson doing? can we assume he is happy just to bring money and play around at the back forever?

Renault boss says his future is "not secure" : http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns36555.html

They need to score points with both cars he says.

From that it sounds like they are going to give him a chance, so I'd be surprised if they ditch him mid season.. stranger things have happened though.

I find him a very hard chap to like, and I will always champion British Drivers...
