Oh I know. I though Pastor was one of those odd drivers - on his day, brilliant; very very quick. Even Alonso respected his Barcelona drive, just a bit too peaky and inconsistent. Shame really, he had raw speed.

Paddy is very well regarded. It got a bit crowded at Mercedes and he swapped his talent for equity at Williams (IIR Frank gave up some of his shares, or they diluted the family shares, I can't remember)
I remember reading a conspiracy theory regarding the one win by Pastor.

Will see if I can get my hands on it.

It was the year of the comedy tyres. Who won was a total lottery based on having the luck of the draw on how the tyres worked.

Conspiracy theories arise from amazing feats that do not have an easy explanation; Maldonado's victory in the Spanish Grand Prix was something like it.

The surprise was not caused by the victory of a team that had not won for a long time, they have not had good performance for many seasons, but, because it was precisely in commemoration of the seventieth anniversary of Sir Frank Williams, founder and owner of the team and great friend of the Formula One boss, Bernie Ecclestone.

To crown all suspicious that positive coincidences arising, shortly after the race there was a fire in boxes at The Circuit of Catalunya in the garage of Williams...

"That was the Spanish GP ... Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president all-powerful man who controls everything in his country, including the gigantic state oil company that pays for the seat of Maldonado at Williams, not like the King of Spain, the elephant hunter, who sent him to silence mouth in public amid international conference, scene recorded on video and shown around the world .. He should have paid Ecclestone or Pirelli to make Maldonado to win; he's on his presidential campaign trying his third term of 6 years... A victory for Maldonado in Spain is a great advertisement for his government. Maldonado is a personal friend of Chavez; the two guys are aggressive and angry ...”

"Anyone who believes that the Williams car all of a sudden, can win a Grand Prix without any thing wrong is acting, he must also believe in Santa Claus. I doubt they can repeat the feat in the remaining 13 championship's races. At the maximum they will make some points characteristic of teams vying for midfield ...”

"This is proof of how Ecclestone enriched with the bookmakers in England, he controls the outcome of this circus ... He wanted to please his old friend honoring him with a victory of his bankrupted team ... Must have sent Pirelli a message to deliver “special tires” for Williams put on Maldonado's car, or have advised the team to use some technical advantage outside the regulations as increase the 18,000 rpm allowed, and after sent their own mechanics to burn the garage to erase the traces or evidence of the wrongdoing ... "

"I do not know why Ecclestone has not hired Hulk Hogan to drive cars in F1, then he would make it clear that everything is combined, as in the struggles of wresting on American TV, that still are very successful in Mexico ... and speaking of Mexico ... Perez is one that should be checked to win a race, to the delight of the richest man in the world, its sponsor ... it's all about the money ...”

The fact is that the 2012 season ended without Maldonado repeating the performance he obtained the Spanish GP. Right at the next race in Monaco, a race where the best cars do not always prevail, where one could expect another good performance from Williams, the Venezuelan crashed his car, making the same mistakes that have marked his career. Sergio Perez, cited by conspiracy, managed a third place in Canada and a celebrated second place in Italy, which apparently earned him a place in the mighty McLaren, replacing Lewis Hamilton.

The conspiracists make use of half-truths to build their outlandish theories, not surprising when sometimes they get half-hits.

Williams has named Robert Kubica as its reserve and development driver for the 2018 Formula 1 season.

After weeks of discussions, a deal was agreed that will see him play a "particularly active role within the team this year".
That will include Kubica taking part in Barcelona pre-season testing, in-season testing and a number of race weekend practice sessions.
He will be available to stand-in as a race driver if required as well as well as help driver car and development performance.

He’s still at the factory every day and the office next to his is well equipped to deal with any health issues. Whether he’s making any serious decisions or not, I don’t know.

On the budget questions, I’ve been given the budget figure they work to from a source in the team and it was below what I thought they worked to, a fair chunk below....Hence them chasing the cash....
Its no secret. Claire williams states the budget in the documentary, cant remember the precise figure but somwhere between 110-120m a year

And handily giving them someone over 25 who is a marketing/sponsor's ideal profile.

I think that's a very canny move by Williams

While I'd have preferred them to give the vacant seat to Wehrlein or Kvyat I'm always happy to see a new guy get his break and hopefully Williams will have the best of both with Kubica providing feedback and development for the car and it's young drivers.

Also Williams' willingness to field Di Resta in Hungary last season demonstrates that the Williams third driver role isn't restricted to simulator and free practice/test driving.

I will expect to see Kubica working his arse off in an effort to displace Sirotkin or Stroll in the coming years (which I'd welcome).

Does anyone else think that Williams have got their 1st, 2nd and 3rd drivers in the wrong order?! If it was me I would have Kubica No.1, Sirotkin No.2 and Stroll reserve. Sign of the times I guess. Sirotkin will smash Stroll.

Genuine question...why would you have Kubica number no.1? Based on what?

It's not really about how many, it's the calibre of the sponsor that counts.
The car could be smothered in many sponsor not bring much actual budget
Or say 10 and a couple of big hitters.....
This is who their website currently show for 2017

Am I the only one that feels the headline should really be "Sirotkin given Williams drive" and Kubica should be a footnote to the article?

Why? They are different news stories. Sirotkin was announced and given its own story yesterday.

I'm happy enough with that. With kubica being away for so long plus the obvious physical limitations he was a risk for a permanent race seat. So the opportunity to get some more miles under his belt and hopefully some Friday testing it can only help his chances for a drive - plus the possibility of stand-in. And Williams get a nice cheque to start the season

I said as soon as Kubica was rumoured for the Renault drive and again when Williams were looking at him that he wouldn't get a race drive at either team and I've been proven right.

No you haven’t. Not until he’s given up trying.
