Ted mentioned during FP2 that a lot of team members were being 'tapped up' about the possibility of joining the new team, when he asked Ross Brawn about a 'new team' Ross confirmed there was but felt it would come to nothing. So with the rumour that Force India is for sale surely it would be better to buy an existing set up than start from scratch, maybe that was the plan, or maybe not and it was/is to be a brand new team?

There was a rumour that there would be a decent overtake today, but rumours are often deceptive.

Doesn't really make sense does it.

Why would a manufacturer (lets say its VAG having their annual dalliance) join in 2018 and invest in building an engine to current regulations only to then have to reinvest for 2021 and the new regulations (whatever they turn out to be) ? Surely you'd just wait until 2021 and enter then, having lobbied for regulations that you wanted (Audi have attended at least one meeting regarding future regulations I believe).

On the flipside, assuming its what would become a customer team, why not buy Force India or STR ? or buy Manor from the receivers ? or at least the assets ? Don't have the money ? does that mean they are trying to put together money deals as well as a business/operational plan ? Maybe thats why Brawn didn't think it'd come to anything when asked on Friday.

Or a parallel team.. e.g Alfa / Maserati using a Ferrari engine. Normal Ferrari "stirring"...?

Whoever the mystery team are if they're only tapping up staff in June they won't be entering anything for 2018.

If you where a big money entry say VAG then you wouldn't be thinking of joining in '18 if only starting now, any '18 programe would have been started a few years back. On the other hand if you where a big money entry then starting to build up a team now for a '21 entry would be about right in terms of securing key personnel and starting to build up facilities. The VW WRC programme had for example three years of R&D prior to entering in '13.

yes that's what I thought, surprised the idea of a 2018 entry wasn't dismissed TBH.

Pretty exciting if it happens though, we need new teams.

They don't have to - with Sauber going Honda next year there's a spare pair of Ferrari engines available

Yep, there's no way anyone would be on the grid next year if they'd just started preparing. Haas was well underway at this stage in 2015 and they don't even design of build their own car.

But it doesn't necessarily mean it's a complete new start up team, could be someone enquiring about buying and renaming force India, it was rumoured that they were for sale and have everything already in place to design and build next years car, tapping other people might be to add to the existing workforce at force India, maybe more experienced people

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Honda fancies another crack at being a team again, that's 4 Honda engines circulating.........for a few laps anyway!

Surely Sauber would be an ideal candidate for Honda to buy, their facilities are up their with the best they just have no money to utilise them.

Absolutely, could just as easily be sauber but its still a new team for 2018, it's the only way it could be possible, to start from a standing start you'd be looking at being ready for 2019 maybe even 2020 if you want to hit the ground running

There is no way that a manufacturer is going to join and run someone else's engine.

Who said 'manufacturer' ? The rumour is about a new team, not necessarily a manufacturer

So it was announced today that Force India is probably going to change it's name, whether it has anything to do with Mallayas court case I don't know, I'm not clever enough to know if the Indian banks have a claim on the team.......who knows! It was further announced today that its either going to be Ecclestone F1 OR Brabham

Are these one of the names that were rumoured over last weekend to be the new team for 2018?

VJ wants to change the name to attract sponsors so he can flog it for the money he's asking, because at the moment no-one is interested.
