They are more like an investor, surely - they must be carrying quite a lot of the Williams OPEX budget?

Will need to wait for their FY17 accounts to guess how much. Williams are just trying to survive to the next (hopefully lower cost) tech cycle.

If Stroll is pulling the strings he's in an unenviable position when it comes to finding a mentor for Lance, have him beaten by an unremarkable Scot or that gent who parks in the disabled bay every day... or have him trounced by a direct peer in Pascal.

Not at all, he's sustained a life changing injury from which he will never recover full use of his dominant arm and still I have full faith that he will certainly beat Lance Stroll.

The Strolls are the reason why I think Paul Di Resta has a decent shot at the seat.

Williams overall income for 2016 was $187m.
Stroll is reputed to bring $80m for 2017.

There were murmerings earlier in the year about Lawrence Stroll actually taking ownership (or a stake in) Force India, with a view to Lance moving there for 2018.

If you were in Williams' shoes would you look the $80m gift horse in the mouth, knowing that it might wander off if you don't?

I'd let them run my nan in the second seat.

I agree, especially with Frank’s illness and the potential differences of opinion between the three siblings.

I don't disagree that it's right for them in their current situation, but it's sad to see them in this predicament when you look back at all they've achieved.

Meanwhile, Massa is starting to bh about the rivals for his race seat... https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/massa-kubica-di...

Given that he'll lose his job if Williams employ someone else, he's not exactly impartial, and bad-mouthing the others is coming across like a spoilt kid's whine frown

Your nan has a super license, cool. My nan had arthritis.

You don't need a superlicense if you've got mobility and a blue badge.

Massa was set to retire last year, he had his big goodbye at the Brazil race, then Rosberg retired, Mercedes got Bottas and Williams needed a driver. Bottas was the faster driver and scored more last year, and I think all the other seats were sorted at the time, so Williams only real option was to get Massa back in. So I'm really not sure where the "I'm brilliant and everyone else is an arse" attitude is coming from. I hope they retire him properly this year to be honest.

There's a record to be broken - in the early '80's Andrea de Cesaris (sp?) crashed something like 16 times in a 15 race championship. Was, appropriately, nick-named de Crasheris by ( I think) Alan Jones.

It's a shame that, after such a dignified and memorable first retirement, Massa is reluctant to bow out to gracefully second time around. He really needs to stop sticking his oar in.

Agree. He's all over the place with his views on who shouldn't be in his seat next season, time for him to retire.

Although I have to say we can't argue with his results in the Williams this season.

Looking at Max's RB deal until the end of 2020, realistically what should DR do after 2018?

My read of the situation is DR would be best served leaving RB after next season, it seems RB wants to build the team around Max - but where should he go?

Ferrari - a team built / being built around SV?? - but DR did hand Seb his arse at RB. DR speaks Italian, has the right name, will be accepted by the tifosi;

Merc - being built around Hammers at least I reckon until 2020 - but (currently) best car on the grid, and DR is faster than Bottas;

Williams - will they have their act together by the start of 2019, if so it could be a real opportunity for DR (although would Stroll Snr. veto such a move?).

Other suggestions on a postcard please. Or is this worthy of a separate thread? (we can spend a year speculating, what fun!).
