Yes it might be badged Alfa - but everyone would know it's a Ferrari engine and I think that would be nail in the coffin; at least as far as I'm concerned - for McLaren.
Why, out of interest? They had the Peugeot days, remember...
I just see Ferrari and McLaren as historic arch rivals and it seems strange to me... but I agree that logically; one could argue why is it any different to any other manufacturer - including Honda.

One of the F1 reporters (sorry I don't recall who) was tweeting yesterday that Honda have pulled out of the Sauber supply deal for next year. If that's true then surely McLaren have decided to stay with Honda.

There's a rumour saying that if Mclaren secure the Alfa/Ferrari engines then Sauber will get the Honda engines but they'll be badged as Mugens that way Honda honours its agreement whilst making withdrawing from F1.

Haas to re-brand engines as Alfa Romeo ? https://www.f1today.net/en/news/f1/228920/haas-may...

So, it turns out that Kaltenborn's parting shot with Sauber was to announce the Honda deal but not actually sign the contract.

Vasseur has been announced as Team Principal and Managing Director. He says his first task is to work out the engine for next year.
Suggests that the owners may be willing to invest to get better engines: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/vasseur-sauber-...

I've seen suggestions they are hunting for an engine deal and are willing to take a driver as part of that - so Leclerc / Giovinazzi (Ferrari) or Wehrlein (Merc)

There has been a lot of communication and meetings between McLaren and Cosworth recently. I wonder what that is all about?

And ironically, they should, contractually have had an Italian engine in the back of that car...another bit of controversy that Dave Ryan found himself in the middle of... smile

McLaren are going for a Cosworth development of a Ford derived engine. It will badged as TVR. Gordon Murray is designing the new car.

Latest speculation is Sainz to Renault before the end of this year and apparently Ferrari are very close to re-signing both their current drivers.

Partly because Vettel has said he'll sign up as long as they sign up Kimi again. He wants Kimi as the second driver.

Not so sure he wants Kimi...

I'd say he doesn't want to a teammate to regularly push him and there is an abundance of possibly available talent. In reality hes going nowhere, not to Merc and wont go back to Red Bull.

Alonso is looking for a drive where he can finish a race - Ferrari said no but he brings popularity.
Verstappen is looking to break contract and leave, given RBR won a race this is now unlikely.
LeClerc is walking away with F2 and will need a drive with a Ferrari engine but maybe not ready

Grosjean has a Ferrari engine and would be the logical replacement but would Vettel be ok with that? hes very outspoken and quick on his day. Leaves a seat open for LeClerc at Haas if it does.

Vettel and Grosjean would be an interesting pairing just to see who could win the"moaning" contest smile
