Yeah target fixation if he drifted into the side of Hamilton's car while berating him but it's clearly a ram, there's a sudden violent change of movement.

I stand by my comment that anyone "excusing" Vettel's behaviour is deluded.

Vettel is possibly the most overrated and luckiest WC the sport has ever seen.

Forgotten about Rosberg already?

I like Vettel a lot but he has a temper that can make him act like an idiot. He needs to find out how to hold his hands up and say i acted in the heat of the moment but yeah I was wrong

Vettel is feeling the pressure of being the lead Ferrari driver. Hamilton is enjoying the absence of pressure from his teammate in comparison with previous seasons. They look poles apart in terms of composure, but happily for the sport, very close in terms of pace. F1 fans should be lapping it up, really.

The Baku incident was just a little tap at walking pace, but everyone's going on like it's Senna and Prost at Suzuka in 1990. PH moans that F1 hasn't got any passionate characters. Then moans again when someone loses their temper. Can't have it both ways.

Nothing wrong with having passionate characters that lose their temper so long as they get a one race ban every time they lose their temper and purposely drive into another car

There are many, many other drivers I'd put ahead of Vettel for that one. Jody Scheckter, Mario Andretti, James Hunt, Keke Rosberg, Jacques Villeneuve... Vettel is worthy WDC material, but four titles flatters him. Same could be said of Vettel's idol, Schumacher. A fast but flawed driver, flattered by a tally of seven WDCs IMHO. (sorry, bit OT)

If that had happened in any other motorsport he would've been black flagged. Whether he deliberately rammed Hamilton or lost control of the vehicle due to road rage is irrelevant, his behaviour was inexcusable.

You see people get punted off without the perpetrator getting penalised regularly in everything from BTCC to Mighty Minis.

Even in F1, Senna got away with it scot-free, Maldonado got away with just a grid penalty (twice), and Schumacher was excluded from a whole season's results (but not banned). All of these for deliberate and malicious car contact at full racing speeds, not a little wheel tap at walking pace.

That's not to excuse his actions, but one does wonder how much of the fury on display here is simply because Hamilton was the victim, or that the perpetrator was Hamilton's main championship rival.

The intent was the difference.

Vettel acted in rage. That's dangerous and he needs to understand that he cannot, under any circumstances, put himself or others deliberately at risk.

Things could have been very different if Hamilton had chosen the exact moment that Vettel swerved into him to floor the throttle.

There were two incidents. One where he misinterpreted another driver's actions. Perhaps he's not fit to drive in F1 if he can't judge such things correctly or at least accept he might be in the wrong. The second was just plain stupid. It put them both at risk as well as others following and brought the whole sport into disrepute.

If he could just be man enough to admit he was wrong we would think so much more of him but Vettel (and his supporters) do not want to believe the facts as supported by the investigation by the Stewards. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Why was the punishment so lenient? Because Ferrari International Assistance. The stewards have practically admitted as much by "...not wanting to interfere with the title"

I think it was DC that, when asked why the penalty was so lenient and brought SV and LH back close together said "...because show business baby!"

And here's me thinking it was a sport and that sportsmanlike behaviour was expected. rolleyes

First of all, I think that today the car was very good. The pace was strong in the race. I think you could see that we were losing a bit here and there, but overall it was a good race. It was a very busy start, and Vallteri was very aggressive. As for what happened at the restart from the safety car, I don’t know why I got the penalty and Lewis didn’t. It’s disappointing, because it could have been a better result. I don’t have a problem with Lewis but I just think that what he did on the track was not ok. By now the decision is done but, in an episode like this one, I still think that if you give out a penalty, then it should be to both drivers.

Clearly there is going to be more issues during the year between Vettel and Hamilton.
Vettel is a complete fking cock. All he needs to do is just suck up the mistake, admit it and move on. But no. He's talking out of his arse.

What a thunder. What a disappointment.

Think people also need to remember that this happened under a SAFETY car....

...so not only did he cause an avoidable accident, he overtook under a safety car and caused a red flag because of the debris (ok debris from other cars contributed to it)

Yes there is contact in other formula but how many times have you seen drivers deliberately hitting each other under safety car conditions and getting away with it?

He also gained an advantage for his actions, not correct in any competition!

Its a very disappointing circumstance, but I can actually take the incident. It at least makes things interesting.

What I can't take is Seb's piss poor attitude after the race. The Will Buxton interview in particular is laughable and actually quite uncomfortable and embarrassing to watch. It is abundantly clear from the video footage from overhead that Hamilton just does not accelerate off the exit of the corner, Seb does and pays the price. To keep banging the same drum and flat out avoid acknowledging it even happened after the fact will lose him a lot of respect.

I can't wait for the boo's next time he's on the podium.

Vettel. Was already a fan of his but recognised his flaws; he was growing on me... then this coming together made me think 'hmmmm' but moreso; the complete unwillingness to even acknowledge his action makes me think that he's a complete tit.

I believe the Steward's enquiry found the telemetry on Vettel's car showed he turned into Hamilton.

In my opinion he should have been black flagged and the FIA should act to increase the punishment.

Vettel is a four time world champion and many young kids in karting and junior racing series will look up to him, so it absolutely has to be made clear that deliberately driving into another driver in a fit of 'road rage' is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Otherwise these kids might think this sort of behaviour is acceptable.

Citing BTCC doesn't help, the driving standards in the BTCC needs to be addressed for the same reason especially with all the junior series on the same race bill, Ginetta Juniors, Ginetta Supercup etc.,..

I never took to him at RB. He wasn't exciting to watch and in his many incidents with Webber he made a few statements that went against what I'd seen. Since then, though, he's been growing on me too. I don't think one should judge on an isolated incident, but this does smack of his days in RB when things didn't go entirely his way.

He's in a difficult situation. He's in the lead of the WDC but doesn't feel secure. The main advantage Ferrari had over Merc, that of it being a one man team, has gone and he's up against a car which, on most circuits, is as fast. More to the point, he's up against a driver who, when well motivated, is the fastest on circuit. He must be looking to his engine allocation and the likelihood of penalties.

All negatives for him. For us, on the other hand, this could be a fun season. I'm enjoying it even if my enthusiasm for SV has been dulled.
