The DFV ran out of development potential and was properly trounced during the turbo era.

The last F1 car to win a race with a DFV was the Tyrrell 011 in 1983, using the engine in DFY spec.

When turbo engines were banned, they introduced the 3.5 litre formula where the best layout was the V10, those were pegged back with rpm limits and eventually ever smaller capacities meant the V8 made the better compromise before we moved to the current V6 hybrids.

The DFV engine architecture lived on in turbo form in Indycar and was also used in F3000, there was also a long stroke version used in sportscar racing.
oh, I thought the engine that powered Schumacher in 94 had its roots in the DFV
The Ford HB V8 (and successors) was a 75º V design. The DFV is a 90º engine. The last DFV (the DFR) raced in F1 in 1991, circa 630bhp.
The two motors actually raced against each other for a few years, the HB having been introduced in 1989 at benetton, with all other Ford-powered teams getting the DFR until 1991 when the HB was shared with Jordan. (Jordan subsequently moved to Yamaha motors in 1992).

Interesting to hear he has been buying some F1 cars. But he couldn't afford a Michael Schumacher 2004 era one!

Didn’t say couldn’t afford it just said he thought it was too expensive

Nice to see Vettel looking relaxed. It must be such a relief to him know he doesn't have to drive that draggy, underpowered POS next year.

Is Vettel struggling vs CLC or has he just given up?

I remember him being beaten by Ricciardo before jumping ship and assuming the performance clause in his contract had something to do with his poor performance, but he's being trounced in quali repeatedly by his teammate this year, which is never a good look.

I don't think you can read much into Vettel at the moment. I know some people will revel in his current malaise.

At this level I think that killer instinct is so important that if you don't have it, for whatever reason, you might as well be driving a regular sports car out there with everyone else.

Having said the above I do wonder about Vettel's motivation now. He has a family, he eschews the fame and media, and he's getting older. None of those things are conducive to having that "overtaking Webber at Spa" do-or-die mindset. Hamilton is still a lone wolf, so only has himself to think about when he's driving at whatever mph. Again, at that level I think that mindset is important.

AM will be the acid test I think. I'm hoping he really shines, and goes out on a high. If he's nowhere, even if its because the car isn't competitive, it'll leave a cloud over his legacy I think, it'll be one of those "should've retired a year ago" situations.

It is the saddest aspect of this season. He was at the top of his game, in a car that he revelled in. He was a bit obnoxious and conceited, you know, like all other drivers would have been in a similar situation.

One might expect a young, promising driver to push him, and ensure he gave a bit more, although if he came just behind the little pest, it would have been natural. But instead, we've got disintegration. I've got the feeling it will only get marginally better for him next season.

It's one thing to fall short of Ricciardo or Leclerc, but if he fails to come out favourably up against Stroll his reputation will be hugely damaged.

I listened to that this week whilst DIYing, he comes across just as well as you'd expect. That and the Zak Brown ones were the best, with honourable mention for Patrese.

Think so, happened when he was up against Ricciardo too, problem is you won't see either Hamilton or Alonso "giving up", that's the difference, between the great and the good.....Vettel (IMHO), is no great!

You know that makes me think

At work we have to use three way communications in the control room and to people outside as accurate info transfer is absolutely essential, yet in so many other pressure environments people haven't learnt the same lessons.

Looks that way, when his team mate can qualify the car 4th and he's back in 15th.

If the car is capable of being 4th, they should get Hulk in for the last few races - he's eager to go, needs to impress as he doesn't have a drive next season, and is almost certain to add a hatful of points to the team's total in what's been an abysmal year for the Scuderia.

That’s an interesting way to piss about $10m up the wall?

Highly unlikely to happen and if it did, they would put Giovinazzi in.
