Sebastian Vettel
Discussion
Hulk was very highly regarded in his earlier years by the commentators at least as well as on here. I think he's a bit too far down his career now, but go back to 2012 / 2013 and many were assuming he'd get a top seat sooner or later. He showed a lot of promise.
And of course we've had someone who's worked with him post on this thread and give some detail of his strengths. EDIT: Actually no, that was on the Silly Season thread. Sorry.
Ricciardo is beating him now - he wasn't at first, and he's not leaving him for dust.
He's a good driver. If his weight and height counted against him in the earlier years when it mattered most in his career, he's been a victim of bad timing.
On the other hand, when rule changes removed his weight disadvantage he was expected to shine but hasn't recently done anything particularly memorable.
I think if the right drive had come up at the right time, he would have done well with it, but he's missed the boat now.

I can't see Seb leaving Ferrari this season as they'd be in the lurch to an extent. He's too much of a gentleman for that.
I still think they’d just bung Raikkonen back in there for a year and then they can put Hulkenberg in the Alfa/SauberI just don't get the love-in for Hulkenberg on this forum.
He's bang average, not achieved anything, the big team owners haven't shown any interest in him and he can't even hold onto a seat at Renault or take the Haas seat from Grosjean. That speaks volumes for team principal opinions of his abilities.
They don't need a serial winner. They need experience. IF Vettel goes and Raikkonen jumps back, there's no-one available with experience.

Would Raikkonen want to go back anyway? By all accounts he's far happier at Alfa than he was at Ferrari.
At Alfa he's number 1. At Ferrari he can only ever be number 2. Makes sense to me.It would be different if he was a younger driver in the ascendancy, or looking to get the multi-million paychecks.. But I'm sure he's happy to accept he's finished developing as a driver now, and there are now faster younger drivers. I also doubt money is his biggest motivator. As he has said himself so many times, racing is his job and he just wants to race. I can imagine the simple pleasure of turning up to do a job you enjoy is far sweeter without the Ferrari team and PR pressures to contend with.

I don't see it. Raikonen has been demolished by numerous team mates. Each time there's an excuse from his supporters. Excuses Verses:
Massa - 'Raikonen lost his passion, he's already won a driver's championship'
Alonso - car setup doesn't suit him
Vettel - Raikonen knows he's a clear number two.
Its up to the driver to let your results away the power struggle, as has been the case with Leclerc this season. When many thought he'd be the number 2 driver. Vettel comes across a great and likeable chap off the track. But I don't consider him an all time great.
I’m glad Vettel won that race because it might spark a return to form in a general sense.
However, if not for the undercut; his younger teammate had him covered and so the question over his form remains.
I was glad to see Leclerc frustrated by the outcome; should make for some fireworks!

He earned the so called undercut by being quicker in and out. However, if not for the undercut; his younger teammate had him covered and so the question over his form remains.

Vettel answers the critics then, turns out he's still pretty good.
He really didn’t.One race where he ran 3rd after a mistake in qualifying, lucked into a win on a strategy call. Granted, he had to hold it together, but that’s the least you’d expect from a 4 time champion.
Put together a string of good results where he outperforms his teammate on merit and he’s answered his critics
I see the Lewis Duvet boys are out in force tonight.
Seb made a minor mistake in qualifying but it was still very close to being 2nd on the grid.
His in and out laps were blistering once the box call had been made. Charles didn't make those blistering laps to keep his advantage.
(Meanwhile, Lewis got the advantage of his team mate being asked to deliberately drive to a slow delta, but that is 'not the same')
If Ferrari have sorted out he aero and got their rear grip back, then Seb may well return to his best.

There you go, dragging yet another thread back to Lewis and his fans....
You've just come to the Seb discussion and effectively said 'well, he's just lucky and the team stitched up CLC'. Despite the evidence to the contrary.

That's because none of you can admit that Seb did a good job today and none of you can admit that the strategy call for Seb was no different to the call made by Mercedes.

I came onto a Vettel thread, gave my account of the situation which both gave Vettel his dues and stated one race doesn’t mean he’s silenced his critics. You've just come to the Seb discussion and effectively said 'well, he's just lucky and the team stitched up CLC'. Despite the evidence to the contrary.
It’s both accurate and factual.
