Remember how Button was smashed by Fisichella in 2009?
I don't think anyone can remember that one.

Just looking into this, Fisi out-qualified Button 15 - 1 eek

And in races:

Not in 2009.

You're trying to tell me Button, WDC for 2009, wasn't out-qualified by Fisichella in 2009? Who knew?

Ah, I see.

Yes, it was 2001 that Jens and Fisi were teammates.

I don’t remember cos Button was always rather forgettable. The single achievement of his I can remember was when he pressured VET into a mistake in Canada that time

Not even "Monaco baby, yeah" in 2009 when he then parked the car in the wrong place and had to run to the podium?

He also dominated Spa in 2012, pole and lights to flag win, memorable to me as I had a decent punt on him at 12/1! Might not be as memorable for everyone else though.

That and Abu Dhabi 2010 will always stick in my mind.

Is Vettel still a tier one driver these days? Has his recent performances really lowered his stock so much? I see the rankings as follows

All tier 1 drivers, capable of winning races and a championship in the right car;
Hamilton
Verstappen
Le Clerc
Riciardo
Vettel

Are drivers like Gasly and Bottas excluded from the top tier as they've come up short against someone special? Do you include Vettel in that group?

There are lots of up and coming unknown, Saints, Russel, Norris, I'd also include Gasly as he's just been so good to watch this year too.

It's OK saying people like Kimi, Alonso and possibly now Vettel are taking up a seat but there really aren't that many drivers out there who you'd guarantee to do well if given the chance.

I still think Vettel would do better this season in Merc, Red Bull or Racing Point.

Ferrari obviously aint great, Leclerc is driving it to get the best out of it, Vettel has obviously given up and just turns up and drives.

yes Lower formulae performance is no guarantee and even the very talented Max went through a torrid spell of accidents and incidents that would finish many a career.

The older guys are, however, not exactly a cheap way of grabbing points.

They can be... I'm guessing some are on a base contract + ££ per point or positions gained.

Vettel has the ability, he just needs the hunger. I don't think it's there at the moment regardless of what he says on camera.

RP will be the acid test. If he's not comprehensively beating Stroll and - assuming the car is competitive - mixing it up near the front, then that will be the point at which serious questions can be asked I think. I don't think you can make much of his performances when his head is down and his team publicly wrote him off at the start of the season. He's pretty much on garden leave.

Vettel is beyond his sell by date.
He has lost the hunger, the belief, the confidence, the edge etc.
His race craft ability and his red mist moments have often been questioned and debated.
I just can’t see him addressing all of these issues and being anything but a journeyman now.
I’d love to see him get a second wind and be up there racing at the front and showing merc, RB etc a clean pair of heels but I doubt it will happen. I suspect he will even fail to outshine Covid boy Stroll.

Agreed. They was a good sky feature that had Jenson and Brundle watching it together (via video link)

Most memorable comment from Brundle 'so Jenson, we're getting to the part where you punt off your second former world champion in the race'

I'm not sure I'd include either Vettel or Ricciardo in the top tier, as likable as they both are.
