It's just people playing F1 2017 smile
Sorry, the are now televising people playing video games?

Fcensoredk me I thought we reached rock bottom with that crappy program of watching people watch TV.
Your about 10 years to late been going on for years started with grand tourismo teamed up with nismo(nissan motorsport) to find talent from gamers so far the several winners have gone on to win various gt races and championship and also have raced in le mans too in real life.
Jann Mardenborough's career includes an LMP2 podium at Le Mans ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jann_Mardenborough
yep and also a Welshmen too. Got a stunning r32 skyline too see it a few times around south wales.

A few football teams have hired players to represent them in FIFA tournaments, and that's pretty low-key compared to Starcraft competitions in Korea where players are competing for six figure prizes (plus money from their sponsors)

eSports is a big business that has been around for over a decade.

Brandon Leigh is a good gamer and probably a decent lad but he is a bit arrogant.

It's worse, I just asked my 15 year old son about it, apparently there is a petition for gaming to become an Olympic sport

Then there's this

One of the presenters called these kids “athletes” - that made me chuckle. Must take a lot of physical training to reach for the crisps and coke in front of the monitor.

Maybe not athletes in the traditional sense but the effort that the top teams in the other Esport series put in is quite extraordinary for simply playing a video game.

If ever there was a thread where PH seemed out of touch with the youth of today this would be it!

Watching gaming is absolutely huge and shows little sign of slowing down. Difficult to pin down accurate figures but it’s not far off the 400m viewers F1 gets per year, there is a massive amount of money in it.

I still play racing games and saw this on TV also - the final race was pretty good and the driving standard incredibly high.

I've telling my eldest lad for years that playing video games is a waste of his time...

He's been telling me for a while that if he gets good enough it's a decent career with serious earnings potential.

Don't know whether to continue to curtail his playing time or actively encourage it as 'training'.

I don’t get why you’d watch and instead of playing the game. I watch motorsport because I love it, but sadly can’t afford to compete at it properly. If I could I’d rather being doing it than watching it.

The costs involved to play a computer game are tiny in comparison, so I just don’t understand why you want to watch somebody else.

If that makes me out of touch, then I guess I am.

Trades description need to have a word ...although 'Epasttime' doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?

& the only difference between this & folk who were 'seriously' into RC or Scalectrix back in the day, is the tinterweb ...it's still the same geeks & nerds

& i say that, as someone with a vested interest in it.

You've answered your own question. The cost of a video game (let's ignore all the competition-level accessories for the time being, which can cost hundreds/thousands if you really wanted to) may not be much to you, but to many in the core demographic (teens I'm guessing) the outlay is too high; much easier to what other people play it at a competitive level. Same reason people go to football matches, tennis matches, motorsport etc. There is the 'being part of a crowd' thing to it as well.

Can't say I've ever watched e-sports; but I do occasionally watch youtube gamers if there is nothing else on the go.

ETA making it an Olympic sport is a bit too much though imo.
