Hi All
I was interested to see who our current F1 drivers have competed against (in F1) and I produced a timeline showing this. It’s quite revealing because you can see, for example, how many current drivers have been on an F1 grid with Jean Alesi and Eddie Irvine. This got me wondering about how many career overlaps there are between world champions. It doesn’t mean much but it is interesting to see that you can get from Farina to Hamilton in only six career overlaps. Anyway, if you want to take a look, see
https://giftsforpetrolheads.com/f1-books/
Cheers
Bob.

Funnily enough this is something that has interested me in the past and got me thinking.
I can get it down to 5 overlaps from Silverstone 1950 to now (not all champions though)

Fangio raced Brabham who raced Regazzoni who raced Patrese who raced Schumacher who raced any active driver who raced in F1 in 2012.

I have an alternative but still with 5

Fangio raced Hill who raced Laffite who raced Brundle who raced Schumacher who raced any active driver who raced in F1 in 2012.

I think I’m missing something from the 70’s / 80’s!

Regards Mike

I get a server error on that link.

I discovered a few weeks back that Kimi has raced in F1 against 2 generations of Verstappens.

Any chance of including sabbaticals -- e.g. Raikkonen (2010-11) which means he hasn't raced against Lucas de Grassi, M Schumacher (2007-9) which means he hasn't raced against Markus Winkelhock.

So did Jenson Button, but not just Jos, both of Max's parents; he apparently raced Max's mum in carts!

Not sure why you got the server error. I must admit I did yesterday too when on 3G in a car - maybe the page was taking too long to load because of the graphics?? Seems OK now. Sorry about that.

Yes that is one of the things I learnt from plotting it - ie Kimi /and the Verstappens

There are only so many hours in the day ;-) Happy to share the original graphics with anyone who does want to do this. But to do it properly you need to include parts of years and then the graphic gets far too large and complex. Think about Button at Monaco last year. That would have to go in really.

Hunt started in F1 in 1973. Stewart's last season was 1973 (and he was world champion).

Lauda unretired himself for the 1984 season (and became world champion) and 1984 was Senna's first season in F1 (with Toleman).

Not quite - Lauda came back in '82, winning his 3rd race. Bernie had expressed doubt about N.L's ability. Niki said "it'll take me 3 races to get in the groove" ( or words to that effect).

The old memory's going.
