He's in place of Ant Davidson, who will be the reserve driver (and racing at the Japan race when Alonso is at the US GP?)

Was thinking that this surely has to be his best chance of winning Le Mans as the Toyota looks like it may be the only competitive car in LMP1 (assuming that they don't repeat last years antics)

Poor Ant. Sounds like he's got a raw deal there, which I don't think he really deserves.

My excitement about Fred has waned a bit learning this. I figured Lopez would have made way

God I hope the McLaren is the car to beat in 2018.

I wonder what the odds are in Alonso being F1 WDC and WEC WDC in the same season?

Extremely slim when he is only doing Le Man in the WEC biggrin
He's doing all except Japan in the WEC, because it clashes with the US F1 race.

But this is the super-season. He is missing 2 more races and a further 24 hours of le mans....

The remaining bits of "super season" are in 2019 ,so no F1 calendar yet to know what clashes......surely ?

I'm beginning to wonder if he's done a deal with McLaren where his pay is lower, but McLaren give him leeway to do this stuff.

Or they have realised the 2018 car will be a disaster, and need to sweeten Fred..........

There has been commitment for the calendar year only - that's how Autosport portrayed it - regardless he couldn't do the double this year (even in a world of a mega McLaren) as there isn't - strictly - a 2018 WEC

I have mixed feelings about Alonso - he can come across as very engaging with a good sense of humour, is clearly a sublime driver, yet has the reputation of being an awkward sod/diva.

However, I take my hat off to him for doing this (and to McLaren for letting him do it).

And even if the season did run over 1 year, he wouldn't be driver's champion as the driver he shares with would get the points for Fuji.

Assuming it completes the race in a points-scoring position/they didn't rest any of the other drivers at other races, swapping AD back in to the car...

A little conspiracy theory I know but what would get better PR for Toyota - Buemi and Nakajima as world champs. of Buemi, Nakajima and Alonso...?
