Grand Prix Driver, Amazon Mclaren Documntary
Discussion
It was an average to good documentary series but could have been so much more by following the team into the season even if it was only at a higher management level. I guess no one could predict what was going to happen. The tacked on 30 seconds of the Honda split didn’t add much and just showed what was missed and was happening behind the scenes.
There was little of the drama or sense of urgency seen in the Le Mans series when in reality a full blown crisis was happening.

I found ‘The Team’ on YouTube last night. I remember watching it in the 90s. Basically a camera team did a fly on the wall documentary series following McLaren (Senna/Andretti). Interesting to compare with the recent one.
I watch it every few years and it's every bit as good as the first time. Senna was right about the noise in the engine!
I really enjoyed that. Honda don't come out looking good at all and I can now understand the morale problems. During the car build on a whiteboard it said in red that the shift pattern was now 24hrs, imagine working round the clock for weeks and then realising your car is junk with a whole season to go. Demoralising isn't the word. Hoping Mclaren do well this year.

Sat down and watched all 4 episodes in one hit today. A nicely honest look behind the scenes, I get the feeling it was cut short by the team after testing went to st though...
That was my feeling too. It would have been interesting to see something after the Barcelona test but the plug was clearly pulled. The series obviously didn't pan out quite as planned but I thought it was great and my only real criticism is that there should be more of it from more teams. Also, how about a Pirelli one and one which covers the governance of the sport and all the politicking associated with regulations changes, teams coming and going etc.
I thought it was good to see a bit more of Vandoorne too, he's been pretty anonymous so far, overshadowed by outspoken superstar team mate. I found it really interesting that on the way to his first day of pre-season testing it was completely apparent that he hadn't slept a wink the night before. Turns out F1 drivers are human after all.

Another thanks to the OP for this.
Was just good to see more behinds the scenes. OK i've only watched the first 2 but enjoying it
No probs... it was clearly something a lot of F1 fans would like to see...Was just good to see more behinds the scenes. OK i've only watched the first 2 but enjoying it
Shame it didn't cover the whole season but I guess a few more of episodes of McLaren with their lip out and Honda floundering wasn't going to be much good for either of them. I'm a big Williams fan but Ron takes a beating on here. I would've loved Honda to come in, see what it was all about in the first season and then McLaren and Honda wipe the floor with everyone in their second season. Ron with a big F.U. grin while smug, uppity Horner looks on. Alas it wasn't to be.
The documentary was sufficiently respectful of Ron.
He certainly wasn't human but he was a great leader and had the right motivations. It's taken me a while (too long?) but I'm beginning to wonder whether the team will ever achieve the same kind of success with a consortium of wealthy Bahrainis, Ojjeh and Zak Brown pulling in all directions.
Ron had the conviction to embark on the Honda project in the full belief that you aren't going to win a championship with a customer engine as long as that engine manufacturer has a works entry. Time may prove him right.

I think the many McLaren employees he helped with medical bills/family issues over many years (without any fanfare) would disagree strongly with this comment. He certainly wasn't human
