I love McLaren but I really wish they'd just knuckle down and be humble whilst working their way back to the front rather than setting themselves up for falls with promises and soundbites in the media that they rarely seem to deliver on and make them look stupid.

This week alone we've had the "our reliability issues are fixed" claim which is a slam dunk if ever there was one for them to be the first to break down in FP1! Now the promise from a few weeks ago in testing of a basic test car with a massive aero update coming for Melbourne that they'd been working on for over 3 months. Well, unless they're planning on bolting lots of new stuff in the next few hours it would appear that claim is also skating on very thin ice because the car wheeled out of the air freight crates in Melbourne today has hardly changed at all from what we saw in testing. Here's hoping they're saving all the good bits to bolt on at the very last minute but it's not looking hopeful frown

Morning race fans, it's been a long winter but finally F1 has returned, who's up to see it?

I'm up and my first comment is the halo really fks up the view from the camera behind the drivers head, just been watching it on Hamilton's car, going into a right hand corner you couldn't see the apex until he was right on top of it.

70 minutes into the season and everyone might as well go home. Mercedes and Hamilton have the championships already wrapped up.

Looks a bit that way doesn't it?

Honda aren't exactly a million miles behind McLaren either are they?

Hamilton topped practice last year by a similar amount, so there is still some hope. Verstappen closer than we were worried he may be.

Ferrari look to be trailing a little though.

Very congested mid-field with Haas per season pace looking like it may be genuine

Apart from the halo I reckon this might be s good season!
I would like to suggest, if it's not already been mentioned, that the halo is re-christened the "thong".

Certainly more descriptive of the shape.

The inclusion of the thong this year is a step too far for me and "I'm out" as far as being a fan and viewer.

There, I've said it, I'll bet the organisers are bemoaning my departure already!

The practice pace seems about the same as last year. No big jump on long run/race pace either.

Wet quali & race?

Accuweather says Albert Park is expecting thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon just before qualifying. Sunday looks dry for now.

I don't care what they do with the racing. But, if Sky don't increase the volume of their commentators over background sounds by at least 10% im rage quitting!!!!

It does look like Haas may have made a step up, and maybe TR Honda have not.

But the PUs in the cars today have got a very long way to go, so perhaps no one is really trying too hard.

Haas basically have last years Ferrari so you expect it to be a step up. They don't have the ability/capability to develop it through the season though.

The midfield looks like an interesting battle though. It will be fun if the media concentrate on that fight and hardly give any airtime to Mercedes walking it. biglaugh

I havent paid much attention, but how different is the TR car compared to last season? I was wondering if they had tried to keep as much of the old car for the early part of the season so as to be able to directly compare power units to aid the RB decision

Saw a bit of FP this morning, cars all looked pretty good given the conditions (green track etc).

Little bit of sand bagging clearly going on though from most teams I think they were all running a lot of fuel.

Quali should be interesting. Wonder if we might see one of the usual mid field teams pop up near the top say P5 or P6. Possible from what I have seen.
