I used to watch F1 in the 80s with my dad and for some reasons, I don't look at the past F1 with rose tinted glasses like many over here. I just remember being so bored having to wait for the races to be finished so I could play with my dad.

just have a look at the Brazilian GP 86. If you can watch the full race without falling asleep, you are an anorak for bad Motorsport.

here is the little gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kipo0ZAgkwg

I have tried other races from the same season... so many boring races with hardly any overtaking!

good luck! lol
Thanks for coming here and telling us nothing.

Jackie Stewart on his 1966 Belgian GP crash.

Graham Hill talks about spotting Jackie crashed when no one else was around.

Jackie Stewart did a series of tests of GP cars, this one is the '88 Leyton House:

There are all the others on YouTube...somewhere.

I am sure Brundle copied this idea for SKY also.

Must say it is great to hear a F1 driver giving his verdict on a car. Jackie was an interesting guy to listen too.

Clearly your father thought it was worth watching. The man has taste.

Are you sure your dislike is not an emotional reaction to not being the centre of attention all the time??

There is a health matters topic on PIstonheads if you want to share.

Please don't be so patronising by accusing people like me of having rose tinted specs when you weren't there . Unlike you , I saw three Grands Prix live in 86 and take it from me , the racing may not have involved overtaking every lap but the spectacle was simply astonishing. Grand Prix racing , in my world anyway , is about far ,far more than the basic metric of overtaking - much as I enjoy seeing it happen .

The fact is , that like most sports, motor racing doesn't translate too well to TV. You only see what the director shows you , the sound is a tiny hint of what it is like trackside and no picture looks good on a little 2 D screen compared to being there - and back then that often meant standing 30 feet away from a 1000bhp plus F1 car . I have seen many F1 races(ie championship and non championship)over forty odd years and have never been even a tiny bit bored at any of them .

No - I just think it had little to do with the thread. It would be like me going on to the "Coronation Street" thread to tell everybody that I don't watch "Coronation Street". True but pointless.

There are lots of discussions elsewhere about comparisons between F1 then and now. I was hoping we could keep this thread as a conduit for those of us who are interested in the historical side of F1 and Grand Prix history in general.

I understand what you mean. the problem (if I can call it that way) is that I grew up with Lemans racing and rally driving in France and I struggled to translate the excitement of them to F1. I have seen every single Goup B cars and most of the Lemans cars of the 80s, but for some reasons we never went to F1 despite my family being involve in Motorsport (Rally mainly). I can watch F1 from 2005 onward on youtube but still don't enjoy the old stuff. maybe the commentating as you mentioned. still I have seen many historic F1 races as a good acquaintance of mine collect old F1 and F2. thanks for sharing your experience.

At the risk of straying further OT I do wish more people would make an effort to understand that motor sport is a broad church and contains many different, but complementary disciplines . In the 80s (as now ) I watched everything from F1 to FF1600 and sports cars, not to mention GP B rallying. Some was brilliant - Gp B and F1 especially- and some was like watching paint dry (most F3 , and this in an era of Senna etc ) .Liking F1 , NASCAR , BTCC , Rallying and drag racing shouldn't be mutually exclusive - I've seen them all 'live ' and enjoyed them hugely .

100% agree. The fact that F1 seems to have isolated itself from the rest of motorsport is indicative of its "up its own fundamental" attitude. I didn't even like it when PH decided that F1 needed to be separated from the rest of the motorsport discussions.

Even this thread is called "F1 Past". I would much prefer it to be "Motorsport Past" or at the very least, "Grand Prix Past".
