To those contributing the old pics - well done, very interesting. cheers
I have a story/ anecdote to add, unfortunately no pics with it:
Apparently, when Denny (the Bear) Hulme won Monaco in 1967, the post race ceremony organizers were unprepared. Nobody knew his name. When he was asked, before being introduced to Princess Grace, he allegedly replied,"Fred Pisswinkle"
Don't know how accurate it is, but a cool story.

I really hope it is true. That would be fantastic.I have a story/ anecdote to add, unfortunately no pics with it:

When Ricardo Patrese won the 1982 Monaco GP, the race nobody wanted to win, the man with the chequered flag was expecting at least 4 other cars to cross the line before Patrese so he didn't wave the flag at Patrese when he eventually did cross the line. So, the flag man didn't know Patrese had won - and Patrese didn't know Patrese had won.
And then they couldn't find the Italian national anthem for the podium ceremony.

I'm reading that with a Clive James commentary accent...And then they couldn't find the Italian national anthem for the podium ceremony.

I remember watching that race live on the little portable black and white TV we had in our kitchen at the time. I couldn't believe what was going on. Walker and Hunt couldn't work out who was winning the race - or if anybody really wanted to win it.
I have been trying to source that footage but YouTube just does not have the BBC one. Hopefully with the Monaco GP this weekend the F1 channel will post it as it is a classic.
Funny enough there was a poll done about the best ever Monaco GP. The winner was the Mansell vs Senna battle which I posted above.
For me it should have been the 1982 race.

Without doubt the 1982 race really stands out. 1996 was interesting as well as were 1980 and 1984.
All great years.Rain normally is the reason for the excitement.
I see Saturday this year has storms but whether it will happen is another matter.
The classic event with the rain was great fun to watch

1981 was interesting because it is the only year it rained INSIDE the tunnel - but was dry outside.Rain normally is the reason for the excitement.

I forgot about that one. The race was delayed.Had a vision of someone having a bath in the Loews hotel above allowing it to overflow while sipping champagne
But this was the official reason
The first incident happened even before the race had started. At the Loews hotel, above the famous tunnel, fire had broken out. While the firemen quickly put it out, their water caused a new problem: somehow the water had leaked into the tunnel, making it a slippery spot on an otherwise dry track. The start of the Grand Prix was therefore delayed for an hour, to get the tunnel as dry as possible, but the danger remained.
This is a quick review
