Nearer home , you may want to check out the colourful career of Tony Dean , who used to be my local 'under the arches' used car dealer in Castleford .He raced everything from Porsche and Ferrari sports prototypes to F5000 and F2 cars and was the only Yorkshireman to win a Can Am race - in his Porsche 908.
We all wondered how many third hand Cortinas he was selling to afford all this.. Customs found his transporter, coming back from racing in USA , was full of smuggled cigars. He enjoyed time to reminisce about his racing career at Her Majesty's pleasure
Wasn't there a BTCC boss funding his team in the 90s through the importation and distribution of certain substances? We all wondered how many third hand Cortinas he was selling to afford all this.. I'm sure there's books that can be written on the various means of funding racing via less than 'normal' means. Growing up on the London/Essex borders in the 80s, it was often said that if your car got nicked to head to Arena Essex on a Sunday to see how it got on in the racing.

I think Trulli was fired and replaced by JV for the final races of that season. JV then failed to score a single point and wasn't retained for the following season.
Exactly right - he took an enforced break for the first 3/4 of 2004He didn't finish on the lead lap once - he then went to Sauber in 05, being ousted from the BMW in favor of Kubica in mid 2006 or so
Such a long thread that I can't recall if we have touched upon Vittorio Brambilla , the March F1 driver known to us all as The Monza Gorilla . One Grand Prix victory to his name, the 1975 Austrian , which he won in dreadfully wet conditions. So elated was he at his win that he lost control and crashed because he was waving so excitedly as he took the chequered flag . Legend.

The same race weekend that saw the death of Mark Donohue of Porsche 917/30 CanAm fame & Indy winner I remember seeing this accident years ago. The footage is shocking.
The actions of the safety crew/marshals was the worst I have ever seen.
This is the background of what happened if you don't want to watch the clip.
Ota was trapped in his car for 1 minute and 30 seconds while exposed to 800-degree temperatures and had to be dragged out of the car by a safety marshal. The marshal laid him on the ground which caused his semi-melted visor to sag onto his face. Ota attempted to get up, but fell. During his another attempt, another marshal spotted Ota, picked him up, and bundled him into the circuit's support vehicle, rather than an ambulance.
Ota was taken to a hospital in Gotemba where he was treated for third-degree burns to his face and neck area and minor burns to the rest of the body. He required plastic surgery to the nasal area as a result of the visor melting on his face. He also suffered from intoxication from the fumes he inhaled from the fire.
As a result of his injuries, Ota was no longer able to move his right arm, right shoulder and fingers properly. His injuries brought an end to his professional race career.

Thought this was quick funny considering Guy races bikes at the TT.
You would think nothing would be as impressive as that.

Even if your not into bikes this guys talk is very informative and funny. Makes you wonder why they take the chance.
Unfortunately Dr John Hinds died while responding to a crash on the 2015, Skerries Road Races,
in County Dublin, Ireland.

Great post - Arena Essex was the 1st place I ever actually raced, in the late 80s I think! Mind you in a V4 Consul it ended as you would expect - in the fence.
But it was great fun - and my car wasn't nicked, my mate was a salvage dealer so it came from his stock!
Sadly I've heard that it is likely to be closing soon - like the original Aldershot and Wimbledon.
