E90 320D 2007 vs 2008
Discussion
Pre 2007 much more reliable, search swirl flaps, cam chains etc.
N47 issues.
Is it auto or manual?
Pre 2007 auto is not great on fuel, usually around 35mpg, post is just over 40mpg, talking averages for someone doing 12k miles of which only 4000 miles being motorway.
Manual box on either is ste to be blunt.
Every BMW manual from mid 2005 through to mid 2011 should have been recalled as far as I am concerned, judder when pulling away which makes it hard work.
Best I ever got from the earlier M47 auto was 40mpg over a tank, the later N47 would see 55mpg over a tank.
But reality is more like 35 vs 39 for most.
I would take the earlier car personally, or find a 30d or even better a 30i, which is far more reliable.

That’s the earlier m47 so should be a decent engine. Manual gearboxes are ok I’d definitely avoid earlier n47 engines cars due to chain issues.

Improves it, and if you put in Redline ATF in there even better, but still crap. The revised clutch and flywheel is night and day difference. I got BMW to put it in ours, but the car was under 2 years old when the revised unit came out.
I had an E46 320td with the M47 engine for 3 years and 42K miles - it averaged 47.8 mpg.
Then I had a 123d with the N47 engine for over 6 years and 81K miles - that averaged 48.7 mpg.
I never had an issue with swirl flaps on the 320td, and only sold the 123d because I had read the cam-chain horror stories!
Since then I've only had N/A straight 6 petrol BMWs, and the E91 325i I've had since March is showing 34.8 mpg on the OBC - I can't believe any E90 320d can't do noticeably better than that!
But to answer the OPs question I'd go for the earlier M47 engine for a 320d, or follow the advice of my BMW Indy and look for one with a 6 cylinder engine - whether diesel or petrol.

Easy way to tell M47 or N47 is start / stop, was introduced with N. Also on Sport models the exhaust tip, downward facing = M47
Also the engine covers.
