It seems odd that we are all concentrating on the one incident when the race was such a thrilling one. There were fights all through the race and towards the end the first four were in clear view of one-another. There were some excellent battles, most notably including Bottas who had an untypical fighting start that might have been race defining and then went on to fight with the Ferrari to add entertainment. It was also clear that LH was struggling a bit, although my thought was that it was tyres rather than engine problems.

I thoroughly enjoyed the race and, if anything, the incident closed up the field. So a bonus for us.

We've all made up our minds. I can't think of anything that will change mine, so:

What a great race.

Superb, thank you.

More I look at Verstapen Ocon incident, more my feeling is that Verstapen is the one making the mistake.

Max was aware the Force India was pushing, still decided to close the door! Idiot!
This video is the most telling; it gives the whole picture.

This is also on the F1 website so someone felt the story needed to be told.

Hamilton was spot on.

Watching while listening to the radio exchanges is quite revealing.

If Ocon's stop hadn't been what looked like a couple of seconds longer than normal he'd have emerged in front of Verstappen and disappeared.

interesting that nobody doing commentary seemed able to blame max in any way at the time. They must all get paid a few quid by red bull.
Cant wait for next year as reb dull become a slightly better mclaren.

Sticks.

Yes, I'd noticed that. Didn't Ocon pass someone (Stroll or Ericsson?) with the same move earlier in the race?

it's weird isn't it. Even granting Ocon being "the one" at fault it was both a relatable move and pure mindless idiocy on vercrashens part, yet brundle kept calling it a lunge which it certainly wasn't. If anything maxs late brake defence had more of the lunge about it.

I'be been pondering for some time if brundle has really had his day as a commentator. Perhaps that's what happens when you work alongside a prat like crofty for too long, you lose your edge through not having to keep up.

I think everyone has a sell by date as a pundit.
In sport, for me, you have to have competed at that level within the last 20 years. In F1 perhaps even less.
Otherwise you simply can't describe it as well as someone closer to it. (eg. when was the last time Alan Shearer went near a football?).
I always prefer to hear from the likes of Webber, Chandok, Di Resta etc than Herbert, Hill, Brundle and even Coulthard when it comes down to details.

Brundle will always be one of the best there's ever been at it and perhaps he'd be used better by replacing Hill or Herbert as an 'elder statesman' type.

Jesus, Brundle's had his day because he disagrees and his F1 driving was a while back - as if anyone on here has experience more relevant than his?! hehe

I'd warn people to go back and listen to Legard's commentary before slagging off Crofty let alone Brundle - be careful what you wish for!

How many times did Brundle say Ocon lunged ?

There was no lunge but he kept repeating it over and over as if he repeated it enough it would be true.

Maybe time to get a more recently retired F1 driver in.

He’s had a good run and been well rewarded for it.

thats a good point, a key difference is football doesn't change much but the F1 cars, teams and tactics are vastly different to 20 years ago, Brundle might do better as a lead commentator with someone as you mention with more recent experience to do colour commentary and analysis. Although, and I say this with a huge amount of respect for brundle but I do wonder (particularly with his holidays) of both his heart and his health, and whether he's the right person to be the lynch pin of sky's coverage.

I was enjoying watching an F1 2012 review when I came across Hamilton and Maldonaldo incident at the Valencia GP.

23:33 Racing for the position which is obviously different to the Ocon vs Verstappen incident but just listen to Hamilton's words.

It's all about experience with Max. Look at Hamilton now.

Excellent footage! So different to the normal TV angles. They make it look comparatively easy yet when you see the onboard footage it shows just how these guys earn their money. So much to focus on and then radio messages to cope with. My brain hurt just being a "passenger" during that footage.
