David Croft is an idiot who's idea of commentary is to shout everything in the vain attempt to generate some excitement.
If you read comments under highlights on F1's youtube channel majority seems to absolutely love it. More over same idiots comment under other series - where commentators behave like normal human beings - saying that the commentary is boring and they think that Crofty is the best. Idiocracy in full effect.Bullitt Five-Oh said:

His commentary is perfectly suited to a 5 minute highlights clip, as you'd expect them to only show the exciting parts where an excited commentary would seem appropriate. It's when he does it non stop throughout the race that it becomes less appropriate. The product is garbage a lot of the time. that does not help.
But Croft is a moron. He has little knowledge beyond about 10 years, so nothing much to add to his endless, pointless stats, which is all he seems to think matters.
The modern style is to shout, a hell of a lot of commentators do it, it leaves me cold sadly, unnecessary and simply trying to endlessly audition for soundbites to go in clips.
His pally thing with Brundle is embarrassing, his attempts at humour are too, so bad in fact I feel he is the butt of jokes for many.

I can’t remember a time when ph WASNT complaining about a commentator.
I personally never even notice the commentator and can’t remember a single thing that Croft or James Allen or Ben Edwards has ever said. I only really listen to what Brundle says as he’s usually saying something interesting. Even then it’s fairly irrelevant.

Funnily enough I can only recall mostly good things being said about Ben Edwards and remember everyone calling for him to replace James Allen on ITV/BBC.I personally never even notice the commentator and can’t remember a single thing that Croft or James Allen or Ben Edwards has ever said. Out of the lot he's the best IMO.

ISZELAYSAUTANAWAHOUIGOU!!!!!1111!!!!1111!!!!!!!!!! Oh no sorry... is that right? They speak English and they don't shout like idiots? So it can be done. Sky needs to pay attention.
Motorsport can be as boring as watching paint dry one moment and then exciting as a two horse race the next.
Watch a variety of motorsport over the years then you'll find very few commentators who aren't shouty and/or over-excited.

I'd like to have John Hindhaugh commentating - very much enjoy his endurance commentary.....
Depends how often you watch endurance racing and for how long. He does have the habit to annoy. A few years ago he often repeated "Buffalo gals, round the outside"; last year his favourite word was awry, with the inflection as to announce to the world that is how you pronounce it.Bullitt Five-Oh said:

I was watching the races from Oulton Park over the weekend on Youtube and thought there was very sensible commentary with no screaming.
As we now seem to have moved on to "my favourite commentator/commentary team" I'd like to nominate Toby Moody, alongside either Julian Ryder or his predecessor Dennis Noyes. Their Moto GP commentaries were fabulous, knowledgeable, full of interest, engaging humour and friendly banter - a joy to listen to.
An earlier poster made reference to TMS which should, surely, be the standard to which all sporting commentary should aspire. Cricket allows the sidetracking into humour and whimsy which makes TMS what it is, which might be more difficult to achieve with motor sport though.
Murray Walker and his "trousers on fire" commentary style was "of his time", and unlike any other sports pundit, but he was hard work for the viewer. I like Martin Brundle, and I like Ted Kravitz. They have a viewer-friendly gravitas, garnered from years of life within the cloistered Formula 1 paddock. Crofty, as has been pointed out, is a good commentator who has probably been told to "spice it up a bit and up the excitement levels", and he doesn't seem completely at ease with it.
Broadcasting live to the masses is difficult, I imagine, and only the very best make it look and sound easy.

A direct back-to-back comparison with Sky Sports F1 coverage is painful!
