Last year, Sebastian Vettel won a dramatic Australian Grand Prix after leapfrogging Lewis Hamilton during a safety car period.

The Mercedes driver was in control of the race until Romain Grosjean's Haas stopped on track and officials imposed a virtual safety-car, which restricts the pace of the cars on track.

The world champion had already made his pit stop but Vettel had yet to make his - and Ferrari pounced on the opportunity.

A pit stop made under the virtual safety car takes 10 seconds less than one made when the cars are at full speed and the time gain of stopping while Hamilton was restricted on track allowed Vettel to rejoin the race just ahead of the Mercedes.

It was a bitter blow for Hamilton in the first race of a year in which he hopes to beat Vettel to be the first driver of the current era to win a fifth world title.

Hmm my predictions...

Ferrari or Mercedes to win. Williams to come home last (not allowing for retirements).

Pretty bold predictions but I just get that feeling winkbiggrin

I'll go for Ferrari dominance but a Hamilton win. Mercedes seem to have the upper hand on race management and with the cars supposedly easier to overtake, you need a good overtaker to take advantage. Lewis trumps Seb on that.

For the same reason, I think Danny Ric will do well - better than the car deserves. Home GP as well.

On the Monday after, there will be thread here talking about the welcome resurgence of McLaren

Russel will prove a revelation, despite the car.

I really hope Williams surprise everyone. Don't want to see them humiliated. LeClerk maiden win.

Looking forward to the season getting underway. Lewis for no. 6 and LeClerc showing Seb the way round. I would like to see Danny Ric building capability through the season, too.

Always hoping for a classic season. Hope the point for fastest lap does not take root...

Red Bull Honda to finish on the podium. Russell finishes 10th.

I think Leclerc will win from Verstappen and Vettel, putting Seb under pressure immediately. Merc slightly off the pace. Both Williams lapped, sadly.

I expect Leclerc to perform well but significantly less like the second coming of Fangio the hyperbole would have us believe.

Hamilton
Vettel
Leclerc

And the fastest Renault ahead of the slowest RB.

The real question is will he crash into Kvyat or will Kvyat crash into him?

I’m really hoping Kimi finishes ahead of both Ferrari’s, they sack Vettel and put Kimi back in the Ferrari, who then goes on to win the WDC.

I think it's possible leclerc could have a maiden win.

But I have say, I don't think it's likely that Williams will do anything other than faceplant.

Williams' speed is deceptive. They're slower than they look!

Vettel for pole and win, then a real mix up between the other Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull.

I get the feeling the Mercedes could be the third quickest car here by a couple of tenths.

Hamilton for pole by 2 tenths. Vettel crash with Verstappen at the first corner.
