I don’t think Lewis will go anywhere alone. I suspect Toto wants a new challenge also and maybe a bigger financial stake than he has now. And if Mercedes don’t want to be a works team in 2021 how about Toto and Lewis (plus key engineers) to McLaren - a perfect swan song for Lewis, a good way to cement the engine deal and assure the car works well with it; and Toto gets to prove he can do it all over again. The mclaren investors may smile too.

If Alonso couldn't bring in the sponsors then it doesn't really matter though - Norris in particular seems to have quite a following on instagram and the eSports stuff. F1 is business first after all.

I think someone said that had Mclaren stuck with Honda the engine would not be as advanced - packaging? Lack of opportunity to test (Toro Rosso?).
Will be interesting to see how McLaren gets on with Mercedes engines.
If McLaren had been willing to allow Honda another team then things might have been different. I still feel it was incredibly short sighted of McLaren to ditch Honda after not even 1 full season of their engine with the same layout as Ferrari and Mercedes had and to not allow any other team to run Honda engines. I guess it allowed them to see the folly of their beliefs when the car itself was exposed as being royally st but I reckon much of the internal reorganisation required was already underway under Zac.

He'll be pissed off if he's missed the Red Bull boat because of his misdemeanours and gets to follow Latifi into a ropey Williams ...

Yep, I think he’s got enough raw pace for a top gig, however the attitude... will be one to watch through squinted eyes for next yr.

Someone will take a punt and run him in testing/fp1.

I think you will find next years car will be twice as fast and cost half as much but we can't explain how we will do that.
In the Red Ferrari Garage it will be twice as fast and cost nothing, paid for entirely by Mercedes supporters.
In the Yellow Renault garage it will definitely definitely win, but not even they believe that and hope other people want to buy their engines, to pay for it,

Just noticed Hamilton is doing no testing because of "Team Sponsor Commitments"

Interesting - presumably means he won't be able to have meaningful input into the design of the car over the winter, having not driven more than a handful of laps on the new tyres.

He didn't do the tyre testing at Abu Dhabi this week, Bottas and Russell did it. I'm sure he'll be there for the new car in winter testing.

They've been developing the new car for months already... The car at this years first test wasn't the same car at the first race of the season. There won't be much meaningful input from the driver over their winter downtime.

He’s been to Malaysia straight after the season for a few years now, Petronas sponsorship commitments. He seems to have negotiated his way out of quite a few of those sorts of things, but always does that one.

"Aaah, we will be winning the er-championship in 2020, this could drop into 2021 but then possibly due to unexplained issues more likely to be 2022. But we will get it done! 2023 will be the year we succeed in our great task, so remember to keep 2024 in your diary."

Interesting graphic showing which country F1’s winners have come from over the years.

Very interesting. You can just tell the Senna, Schumacher, Vettel and Hamilton eras.

He needs to update it to the end of 2019 now biggrin

Tricky - would that be based on which country owns the team or which country the team are in?

Mercedes: German team, staffed chiefly by British people in Britain and lead by an Austrian. Very tricky!
