I've said for months RB are a second solid driver away from beating Ferrari next season, so no offer to such a driver, however unusual would shock me.As for the truth behind this specific rumour, who knows... I bet they've had informal discussions with a few drivers. Might all come to nothing if Albon shines.

Probably Alonso making up his own rumours. He's not been in the news for a few weeks.
This sounds most likely, can't see any of three top teams making offers to him Stan the Bat said:

It would certainly take Max's mind off all his other problems, as he'd have his work cut out just keeping up with Fernando!
I like the cut of your jib sir.I think people would be surprised just how off the pace he would be in a front running F1 car.
Max would have him for breakfast and Fred would start slagging the team, car, engine and soft caffeinated drinks off as usual.
It’s never going to happen.

When was the last time Fred was in a front running car ?

When was he WDC last ?
Rose coloured spectacles ?
My recollection of Alonso is that, 2007 excepted, he routinely demolished his team mate.
He made very few mistakes on the track (leaving them for his decisions off it...).
Arguably he very narrowly lost the 2007 and Ferrari years championships due to strategic errors by the teams at vital times.
If Alonso's driving ability was properly represented by history, I'd argue there would be no injustice in him being a 4 time WDC with Renault (x2), McLaren and Ferrari, with KR having none and SV having only 3.

To be fair he’s had 5 decent stabs at a WDC in a leading car and got 2... no one can take that away.

I agree with most of what you say, with the exception of 2007. Hamilton should have been WDC that year, the China fiasco by the team cost him the title. He made very few mistakes on the track (leaving them for his decisions off it...).

He made a stupid mistake entering the pits and landed in the gravel. Rookie mistake by a rookie. But there is no way Mclaren were treating both drivers equally after the massive fall out.
Alonso, Hamilton and McLaren shot themselves in the foot in 2007.
