Do you deliberately attach a negative connotation to every mention of Lewis Hamilton or is it subconscious?

But Verstappen could be the only man in the current Championship who is a replacement for Hamilton when he retires hence why he was non-committal about Verstappen.

But Verstappen will never be in the Mercedes while Hamilton is still in the team.
Indeed.

Given the opportunity, all TP's would be considering Max. He's one of the top 3 drivers on the grid and is young and hungry. That's the trifecta right there. As owner of the fastest car, Toto is one of the few people who could possibly draw Max in, if he wanted him. But as said, won't happen while Lewis is still there, despite what Lewis may say to the media.
Couldn't have put it any better myself chaps, I'm in 100 percent agreement.

Dunc.
He's the next big thing. Would they really be happy leaving him to drive for a competitive team, potentially taking points and championships away from them rather than having the problem of managing two stars together?

If that Red Bull makes that final leap and makes up the final performance gap to make Max a title contender, Merc will consider taking him even if it pisses off Lewis - which everyone who knows him says it won't.

They only way that doesn't work is if Lewis throws his toys and swaps to Red Bull. I don't see him doing that unless Max destroys him from season 1.

Hulk and Mag have history. It could cause more fighting than Mag and Gro.

For the same reason as Alonso. I equal cars, Hamilton would be left in the dust.
Again, this makes no sense. If Max can leave Hamilton in the dust, Merc would rather he was doing it in a Mercedes than a competitor's car. They won't boot Lewis out to do this, either. If Max moved to Merc and Lewis left, it would be Lewis's decision and he won't do that in season 1.

Ignoring the Alonso comparison because that's already been answered in 2007.

If instead Alonso had gone to Mercedes in 2013, and I don't see Nico being able to outgun Fernando.

But Mercedes made the right strategy call with Lewis especially as they also wanted to reposition its street car marketing.

“Suck my balls”gate? They are grown men, I’m sure they’ll get over it.

(I’m also happy to assume it is Grosjean who’d be going and not Magnussen in this scenario)

Let’s not overlook the fact that Hamilton also happened to be every bit the driver Alonso is but without the baggage. Hence the driver than Lauda, Brawn, Toto head hunted.

Witness Alonso out in the cold...

Ocon will be released from finishing Merc contract for 2020. Likely Renault seat.
Hulk gone next year then?
The dominoes will all start to fall into place if and when Bottas is announced as retaining Merc seat. Ocon to Renault as was expected last year, Hulk to Haas to replace Grosjean although the history with Mags could b a bit of a hurdle.

Also see Merc releasing Ocon as great news for Russell as he will be next in line for the Merc seat if or when Hamilton either retires or goes to Ferrari or if Bottas has a stinker of a year in 2020 or beyond.

I very much doubt if Mercedes thought Ocon was the real deal Bottas would still be in the Mercedes for 2020.

Mercedes made the right call.

Be interesting to see Ocon against Ricciardo. My money is on the latter.

If Ocon beats Ricciardo over the course of a season in "equal machinery" it will be down to reliability issues IMO.

I agree.

I honestly think Ricciardo has taken over from Alonso at bad team moves.

Hopefully, the car improves but I think he has landed in the crap.

Kick a kid when he is down.

Thought this was interesting

"No one knows who will be Verstappen's teammate next year, so Albon has the opportunity to perform and develop without any pressure in these nine races."

Will Red Bull look outside their own stable for 2020 is Albon doesn't perform?
