Gasley - What's gone wrong?

Having watched the guy through GP2 and early F1 career, I like many felt he had an exciting future and when confirmed to go up against Max I was hoping for a better run for him but it just seems to be getting worse.. Leads the question, is he is as good as thought or was Brendon Hartley just that bad that Gasly looked that much better?
Its a shame and I can see a Red Bull switchero coming although I am a fan of Kyvat who I think deserves a chance at redemption in a Red Bull.
Thoughts?

I think he's in the middle of a perfect storm. He lost confidence right at the start of the year with a big testing crash, this years RB seems a bit of a tricky car to extract the best from and he's up against a generational talent in Max. Add all that together wrapped up nicely with a big dose of pressure, media attention, questioning and strong drivers in the feeder team and he's really in a difficult position.
The lad is absolutely talented, he has proven that, but he needs an environment where he can relax a little and be more natural. That isn't really possible right now.

I am inclined to agree, a shame, but Red Bull have to be vicious while they aren't winning races and championships, points hauls are all they care about and if one car is scoring all the points, something has to change.*At least 6th place at the minimum

Last bit is what interests me in your post, he isn't a rookie anymore and is expected to deliver, however the team still need to get behind him and get him ontop of the car but I guess with a junior team they dont actually have to bother with that, you sink or swim?The lad is absolutely talented, he has proven that, but he needs an environment where he can relax a little and be more natural. Environment both internal and external - a lot of which is due to the luck he's had. I'm not just saying that RB isn't providing the right environment at the moment, but all the other elements adding on top of that too. I agree, with a team like RB you shouldn't need months and months of settling, if you truly are a world class driver. If you don't perform, you get replaced. Gasly is flirting heavily with that fine line at the moment.Andy S15 said:

It certainly isn't 'helped' by Max's form currently as he is perhaps making the car look a little better than it is.
His form looked to be improving bar some misfortune (Baku driveshaft failure, Barcelona large chunk of rubber stuck in front wing badly affected aero performance) but France was a big disappointment, hopefully he finds something in Austria
I don't see any sense in swapping him out before the end of the year. To drop him mid-season would make that 2nd RedBull seat look a bit toxic and pile enormous pressure on any replacement.
Both Torro Rosso's seem to be doing a good job without really pulling up trees - they may have a stellar drive in them this year but haven't done it yet.

Almost without doubt imo. He never looked to be the lesser driver to me. Different strengths to Max perhaps, but overall they were often racing very close to one another and the results were very comparable. If Ricciardo hadn't suffered such appalling reliability issues perhaps he could have had ended last years season ahead of Max - he suffered 8 retirements to Max's 2...Both won two GP's last year.
Actually I just checked - so far this year Max has 100 points, Gasly 37. If DR was driving for them and got around the same points as Max, it would be around 200 in total. Ferrari currently have 198 total, about the same.. But that's not the full story. This season there are only 5 drivers at the top, if DR was with RB then it would be 6 drivers at the top, and Ferrari would surely have lost some of their current points with a 6th driver in the same battles each race.
It's a shame he isn't there. It would have made this season much more entertaining to see Ferrari battling for second in the constructors. As it is, with whatever Gasly's problems are, it's a foregone conclusion. But I think in reality, whatever the points, it's fair to say the Red Bull is the equal opposite of Ferrari this season - they did a very good job.

Almost certainly, the Red Bull is capable of beating the Ferrari as Max has proved, with a driver in the second car performing as he should be Ferrari would look even worse this year. IMO all he needs in one good race weekend. He really is up against it and having Verstappen as your teammate doesn't help.
It's his first year in the Red Bull. I do hope he improves and gets another year at least.

I think they're genuinely trying to help him improve and grow in to the car this year - and there has been notable improvement. It's up to him to dig deep though, he basically has to be at least close to Max by the time the driver market gets underway towards the end of this season. I doubt they'll entertain the idea slow progress beyond one season.It's his first year in the Red Bull. I do hope he improves and gets another year at least.

Ferrari will be aware of that, so too will Red Bull. So they will know that next season if they get an awesome driver in the second car, they will have an excellent chance of coming second as a constructor in 2020. I imagine that would justify a budget increase to secure any such driver... No driver that wants to drive for them is unobtainable even if they are contracted to another team, there is generally a cost option to leave and if another team will pay off that cost, they can have the driver. That puts Vettel/Ricciardo/Russell - basically any proven fast driver in a lesser car - on the table. Depends how much they want to become team number two. Surely end of the line for Gasly...

Would be interesting to see Kyvat back in the main team alongside Verstappen.
I bet Red Bull are kicking themselves about losing Carlos Sainz Jr and I actually think he would be driving at the same level as Verstappen if he was given the chance instead of Max to move up to the main Red Bull team back in 2016.
