Fernando Alonso
Discussion
I think this effectively confirms that Max won't be leaving Red Bull too - it always seemed unlikely and there's no way Alonso would've signed for Aston Martin if RB had that seat available.
Alonso and Russell would've likely been pretty combustible but I'm still surprised Toto didn't throw a suitcase of money at luring Fernando. I still struggle to get my head around the idea that Mercedes will put Antonelli into their car, it'd be a very risky move for a team that's made fairly conservative driver decisions all the way back to 2010. If Alonso's happy with a 2 year contract, surely they have a fatter chequebook than AM?

It isn't impossible that Toto *did* offer a suitcase of money, and that Fernando used that in order to obtain a better deal from Lance...Alonso and Russell would've likely been pretty combustible but I'm still surprised Toto didn't throw a suitcase of money at luring Fernando. This is a risky move from AM and I'm surprised they've done it. The man has defied the odds so far, but time makes fools of us all. Look at how Valentino Rossi almost instantly fell off the pace around this age.
He fell off because the tyre characteristics changed more than anything. Bit like Vettel fell off when the cars went from V8s with blown diffusers to the hybrids.I think this is a good move by AM. He's still got it.

He fell off because of age. Like every other person who has ever existed. I think this is a good move by AM. He's still got it.

That was never ever going to happen. I can't believe people even discussed it.He was maybe not going to move this year, but the Red Bull war is definitely not over and Max appears to firmly be in 'Team Austria' as opposed to 'Team Thailand'.
It certainly wasn't likely he would leave....but I'd not say it was impossible.

Surprised to see him staying with AM, would be interesting to know what Honda feel about it in view of past issues.

I seriously doubt Honda will have anything in their AM deal that says they get a vote in who the drivers are.
You think Yuki Tsunoda was brought in to Toro Rosso for his boyish good looks? He never did anything spectacular in his junior career.
Honda don't call the shots, but don't be surprised if a Japanese is involved somehow.

I don't think most rational adults would hold a grudge that long. Even Ron Dennis hired Alonso a second time after Spygate.
Ron always said - show me a good loser and I'll show you a LOSER. Once the dust settled I don't think Ron will have borne a grudge.Zarco said:
