British Grand Prix: New Silverstone deal announced until 2024

The future of the British Grand Prix has been secured for the next five years with a new agreement between Formula 1 and Silverstone.

This weekend's event was due to be the last after Silverstone ended its contract because it was too expensive.

But after two years of negotiations, Silverstone and F1 bosses signed a new deal until 2024 in London on Tuesday.

F1 chairman Chase Carey described the race at Silverstone as "an integral part" of the future of the sport.

Guessing that the BBC were waiting for the announcement which I'm sure only happened at the press conference this afternoon.

Good news though and hopefully on terms that Silverstone can make some money from.

It wasn't on Pitpass until today. I would assume that the normal policy in such cases was followed and the information was given to the BBC yesterday but embargoed until a specific time today. That's how things work.

It's good news of course, and not guaranteed as there will be just 21 races in 2020 and there are lots of new circuits in the pipeline. Germany looks a bit iffy, as does Mexico. I should imaging that the negotiations were not just a formality.

I can’t wait to see how much they’re able to bring ticket prices down for next year now they’ve got out from under Bernie’s exorbitant hosting fees...

Lol, you are kidding right?

Eraly bird is always a decent deal, but just try and remember the prices now and what they are next year, they will probably go up.

They should make Silverstone a permanent mandatory on the F1 calendar. Along with:

Monza
Spa
Suzuka
Interlagos
Monaco
Hockenheim
Circuit-GillesVilleneuve/Montreal
Red Bull Ring/Austria
Hungaroring
and bring back Magny-Cours for Paul Ricard

Never get the fuss about Magny-Cours the only good races there are when the weather is mixed. Other than that it's pretty narrow and has one real overtaking spot.

Bring back Rouen, Reims or Clermont-Ferrand. Since the 70s the French GP venues have been pretty uninspiring.

I was being a bit naughty in my suggestions in the sense that if an old style circuit is still in active use, I would prefer if F1 left it alone. Modifying a traditional circuit to meet the lunatic requirements of modern F1 does two things -

ruins the circuit

puts the circuit owners under massive financial strain (leading to bankruptcy in some cases).

We do the Rouen GP every June. I think the aero still needs some work on the T5 though, as we were struggling on the straights laugh

The BBC had a "deal expected to be announced later today" story up yesterday morning, morphing it in to a "deal announced" story once the deal had actually been announced. If Motorsport news had the "deal announced" story up before it was announced they were either playing fast and loose with the press release embargo, risking being taken off the list going forward, or just have sloppy journalists.
