Big changes to MSA licences - Medicals

Licence renewal came through today. While the Nat B has gone up in price (to £99) and changed name to ‘Race Inter Club (UK only)’, there is now NO requirement for a medical if you are between 45 and 59, only a 3 yearly eye test.
If you’re over 60, you only need a medical at 60, 65, 70, 72, 74 and annually over 74. Saves about £100 per annum and a lot of hassle. Also for previously declared medical conditions you can now write an explanation rather than having to get a doctors letter (which in my case [history of depression] is usually a terse note from my doctor saying ‘he’s perfectly ok why do you need this’).
P.S. Unclear how ‘U.K. only’ will apply for races at Spa run by U.K. clubs, I used to have an international historic which covered this, however that seems to have disappeared.

As a UK licence holder, to race at Spa (or anywhere else outside UK) you need a Nat A or above.

So who carries out the eye test, how thorough is it, and that would obviously govern whether there was a cost? Not sure if I've misread this bit on the form but the way I understand it is based on the explanation you provide, they then decide if you need to provide a doctor's letter or not.ginettajoe said:

It's laughable that people taking part in a sport that the average person can only dream of are starting a petition to complain about an average £1 a week price rise when the additional benefits the new licenses offer save far, far more than that amount.Kraken said:

It's at the very bottom of the pile, the cheap clubbie autotests, targas, road rallies etc that are getting 50% price hikes, granted only a fiver here and £50 there but still a 50% increase.
Those running at the top are not getting big price hikes and yes if you are throwing thousands, tens of thousands, of hundreds of thousands at motorsport you are not going to notice the price hikes.
£50 currently gets you five entries at a clubbie autotest or car trial, maybe use a 5 litres of fuel at each one. These are the events at the real grass roots of motorsport. Many use very cheap road cars
I can assure you that the the dozen or two dozen entries you get on a clubbie autotest on a airfield are spending as much on a season of autotests as some might spend on a single round of drinks at a post event p155 up.
These are the same people that help organise bigger events, go out and marshal on them,they have a passion for motorsport that goes way beyond competing on a few low cost clubbie events. Many bring youngsters in to the sport and show them that it doesn't cost a fortune to compete and you can enjoy competitive motorsport for under £25 an event. Some stay at that level and enjoy it, some move on up the motorsport ladder. Some after competing at a high level come back to the clubbie stuff simply because they have spent big money in the past, their lives have moved on and they just want to enjoy motorsport at a level that doesn't cost much.
These are the people that MUK say they want to encourage and help................as long as they are willing to pay for the help that in many instances they just don't need.
Not only are many at MUK out of touch with grass roots motorsport so are the the I'm all right jack, motorsport isn't for poor people who are not powerfully built company directors, that just don't see why its a problem for or care even less about grass roots motorsport.
MUK/MSA have already lost hundreds if not thousands of "customers" to indikarting, they have learnt nothing from that and look set on repeating the same mistakes with other forms of motorsport.

How does this" encourage" Motorsport?
I only do one race per year and was already thinking it was getting too expensive to carry on with. So along with a 2 year old fire extinguisher needing to be sent back to the manufacturer a £700 composite seat that has been used 5 times needing replacing because it's too old i have another £50 to find for no reason i can see benefits me in any way.
I don't have to pay for my medical so i'm not getting it back there,f
