Very sad to hear of the death of Clive James. A very funny man especially when he did the season reviews for F1.

As a tribute to his F1 work. A lot more out there is you care to look. smile

His season reviews were a joy.
I dread the C4 one which is just ben edwards finish line shouting at me 20 times in an hr.
A sort of F1 aversion therapy.

Loved most of his stuff but he absolutely brought something different (in a very good way) to F1 reporting

Something called -

Intelligence
Insight
Empathy
Recognition of what makes racing drivers tick
Understanding of bullst when he saw it (and there always has been plenty of it in F1)

I don't think we will see anyone like James again.

First time I came across Clive James was in 1997 when ITV got the F1 rights. Since then I would listen or read whatever I could get hold of (before I got the internet).

A real loss, he had a skill which was more of a gift for story telling. But not with flowery language. It was delivered in an accessible way, even me as a 10 year old in 1997. These days what do we have? Andrew Benson blowing smoke up Hamilton's arse.

He's irreplaceable as far as I'm concerned.

I first came across him in 1980 when I discovered his Observer TV review column. When he brought out his first compilation volume of TV reviews, I snapped it up. He started reviewing for The Observer in 1972 so reading his TV criticisms of that era of TV is quite revealing today.

1986 really was very funny. He was brilliant. You wonder how he got the job laugh

His narrative on the 1982 season review of Gilles Villeneuve's fatal crash showed his abilities; factual; sensitive and emotional all in one. They were both rare talents.

Can somebody confirm that he did the reviews for 1982, 84 and 1986.
Were there any more?

The full text of Clive James' most famous quotation is simply unimproveable

" Even in moments of tranquility, Murray Walker sounds like a,man whose trousers are on fire."

James knew so damn much about so many things - one minute talking about Beowulf and the next he'd be sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge of WW 2 combat aircraft

He didn't do that many (unfortunately). Simon Taylor was the voice on some of those earlier season reviews.
